Believe UK‚Äôs Top Albums Of 2012 ‚Äď Staff Pick #4: Dave Philpot

November, 30th 2012 11:30

Artist: Madrid
Release: Madrid
Label: Coletiva Produtora
Release Date: September 2012

Picked by:
Dave Philpot | Head of Sync

“Madrid, formed of ex CSS and Bonde Do Role member, produced a album which is unique, taking you on a journey from playful to cinematic to melancholy and that’s just in one track, the art of the album is lost in mainstream music so we should cherish the ones that come along” – Dave Philpot

Madrid formed when London based singer Marina Vello (former MC of Bonde Do Role) flew to Sao Paolo to write songs with former CSS founder and multi-instrumentalist Adriano Cintra in 2011. After a successful collaboration writing two songs in a week they decided to write an entire album together. Marina travelled back to Sao Paolo in February 2012 for 2 months during which time they wrote and produced ‘Madrid’ the album and started Madrid the band.

Departing from the Brazilian Baile funk sounds that they had forged their musical careers with, Madrid instead adopts a more cinematic, mature sound allowing Cintra to show his classically trained skills on piano. Along with Marina’s melancholic vocals, they create a much more emotive and low-key sound.

Release: Be Strong
Label: Southern Fried Records
Release Date: June 2012

Picked by:
Leigh Morgan | International Trade Marketing Manager

“A joyously fun album, reminiscent of early 90’s house and electronica, ‘Be Strong’ brings a smile to the face on every listen, and is a welcome antidote to the more serious albums of recent times in the genre. Follow the bears” – Leigh Morgan.

Formed in 2009, this furry electronic band are made up of Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) and Raf Rundell (Greco Roman Soundsystem). As well as making their own blend of 2-step, house, hip-hop and soul, The 2 Bears have remixed for the likes of Jessie Ware, Santigold, Metronomy and Death Cab For Cutie and were featured by Virtual Festival as ‘Ones To Watch in 2012’. Released via Norman Cook’s forward thinking Southern Fried imprint, ‘Be Strong’ features stand-out tracks¬†‘Bear Hug’, ‘Church’ and the crowd favourite¬†and title track, ‘Be Strong’. Believe Releases w/c 12/11/12

November, 12th 2012 13:23

Artist: Maribou State
Release: Scarlett Groove
Label: Southern Fried Records
Genre: Dance – Beats & Breaks / Electronica

Maribou State continue a great 2012 with their 2nd EP for Southern Fried Records. ‘Scarlett Groove’ follows ‘Native’ and reinforces the compelling sound which saw them named as ‘number one producers of 2012’ by Eddy Temple Morris.

The title track sees the guys team up with Saint Saviour, Groove Armada’s leading lady who is about to embark on her UK tour. Described by the Quietus as ‘one of the most breathtaking talents on the planet’, her dreamy vocals are apt as we enter our long overdue Indian summer. ‘Pagoda’ takes things a little deeper, whilst ‘Summerfolds’ and ‘Puppet Strings’ are cuts for the clubs; the EP really shows the breadth of Chris & Liam’s sound.

Despite living in rural Hertfordshire, the guys are making waves in the city having already remixed The 2 Bears, Wretch 32 & Crookers this year. Their rework of Submotion Orchestra has notched up 40 thousand plays on Soundcloud and was featured on the front page of XLR8R. They are currently working in their self built studio ‘the shack in the back’ finishing the debut album on the horizon for 2013. Listen to ‘Scarlett¬†Groove’ below and listen to a recent mix the boys did for online music magazine Bokah,¬†here.

Artist: Public Service Broadcasting
Release: Everest
Label: Test Card Recordings
Genre: Alternative РElectronic / EBM

Public Service Broadcasting are moving ever upwards – this time setting their sights on the summit of Everest.¬†They have teamed up with Studio Canal Plus to adapt the 1953 feature-length documentary ‘The Conquest of Everest’.¬†The stunning film was shot by expedition member George Lowe, and recounts Hillary, Tenzing et al’s successful ascent of the tallest mountain in the world. PSB weave together the lyrical commentary from the film with a soaring soundscape of glacial synths, propulsive drumming and triumphant brass, to compelling effect. Watch the video here.

‘Everest’ precedes PSB’s debut album, due to be released in Spring 2013, and sees the duo take their unique live AV show on their most extensive tour to date.

Artist: Hot 8 Brass Band
Release:¬†The Life & Times of…
Label: Tru Thoughts
Genre: Jazz РBig Band

New Orleans’ Hot 8 Brass Band was founded in 1995 by tuba player Bennie Pete, Jerome “Bay Bay” Jones (trombone) and Harry “Swamp Thang” Cook (bass drum) to play brass band music professionally. Although many of the current members began playing together in high school, over time the line-up has inevitably shifted and changed, and continues to do so.

But any incarnation of Hot 8 Brass Band will boast eight or nine players of the highest rate, bringing the passion and noise through a bevy of trombones, saxophones, trumpets, snare and bass drums, all buoyed up by the immense tuba basslines of band leader Bennie Pete, who¬†sums up their music as “feel good music…music with a message. It’s life music.”
