olafArtist: Olof Arnalds
Release: Palme
Label: One Little Indian
Genre: Pop – Folk

Palme ‚Äď her fourth album in eight years – is Arnalds‚Äô most warm, direct and otherworldly record yet, a fragile creation that‚Äôs nevertheless invested with bags of charisma and energy. It‚Äôs also her most collaborative venture, with two principal trusted collaborators and friends on board: Gunnar √Ėrn Tynes (of electro-folk collective m√ļm) and long-term musical foil Sk√ļli Sverrisson (who counts Laurie Anderson and Ryuichi Sakamoto among his productions). Kerri is a dreamer, with a passion for space and a love of music.

fumacaArtist: Fumaça Preta
Release: Fumaça Preta
Label: Soundway Records
Genre: Alternative

FUMA√áA PRETA‚Äôs hard hitting, free-wheeling debut LP brings together elements of tropicalia, psychedelic rock, fuzz funk, musique concrete, acid house, radiophonic electronics, hair metal, voodoo and African, Brazilian and Latin rhythms. Beaming down from another planet and sonically stretching across decades, ‚ÄėFUMA√áA PRETA‚Äô will be released on Soundway Records in September.

FUMA√áA PRETA (pronounced Foomassa Pretta ‚Äď meaning Black Smoke) started as a studio experiment when Alex Figueira, a Portuguese-Venezuelan producer and percussionist, invited some old friends to join him in the tiny analogue studio he built on the back of his house in Amsterdam.

After producing 2 critically acclaimed 45s, Fumaça Preta continued to work in the Barracão Sound Laboratory, swiftly producing their debut album. All musical boundaries collapsed during recording as the band drew upon their vast array of varied influences.

Live, FUMAÇA PRETA becomes a quintet that swerves in and out of endless musical avenues but never loses the rock solid heavy psychedelic groove that drives them.

Every second I get older there’s a line
I get down and pray for time
Every moment is a boulder being fired
Every night a day has died
Let it go, you can’t try to race it
Don’t you know you don’t have to face it
Keep your head don’t be misled to waste it

Run away with me

I’m a sinner cos I’m led by vanity
Someone come and save my soul
Say the word and I will take you down with me
Somewhere we can both grow old

Let it go, you can’t try to race it
Don’t you know, you don’t have to face it
Keep your head; don’t be misled to waste it

Run away with me
Just run away with me
Run away with me
Just run away with me

I don’t know what to do about this any more
You know sometimes I forget I’m alive
And then it hits me in the night

When I realize it’s
Too dark and it’s too light
And it’s too loud and it’s too too brightAnd it’s too hard
Too long to be on your own
Run away with me
Run away with me
Run away with me
Run away with me

hot since 82 somebody everybodyArtist: Hot Since 82 feat Black Box

Release: Somebody Everyday
Label: Knee Deep in Sound
Genre: Dance

As a child growing up in Barnsley’s South Athersley estate in the early 90s, Black Box would often come booming out of his kitchen radio, older brother’s stereo or the boy racer’s red MRK 2 doing the rounds. So it’s no wonder the seminal group who captured a moment in British culture also captured the imagination of a young Daley Padley.

Some 20 odd years later and not being one to shy away from a vocal sample it’s no surprise Hot Since 82 has served up a summertime moment that’s not just for somebody, it’s for everybody…EVERYBODY, EVERYBODY!

Currently hurtling his way through a summer that would make any young aspiring DJ weak at the knees, Mr Padley has made a track that simply reflects every bit of sun, sand, sea, and sordid after party he’s coming across and everybody he’s met along the way.

The original is perfect for the sunshine raver. Whether on the beachfront, pool-side or rooftop terrace this ticks the box. If you’re feeling sinister, fear not, Daley has enrolled Olivier Giacomotto and Cadenza’s Argy to put their spin on things with two solid reworks. If you’ve seen HS82 recently chances are you heard him hammering the Giacomotto mix, this is how remixes are supposed to sound!

Hot Since 82 is quickly becoming one of the biggest DJs in the world. Having starred on the front cover of Mixmag, performed live with a string quartet, nailed x2 Essential Mixes, served up several Beatport No.1s and this month kidnapping his fans with his new TAKEN project which sold out in 30 mins flat! As if that wasn’t enough he’s about to embark on a KNEE DEEP IN SOUND world tour that will run from September until the end of the year.

Somebody Everybody is the third release on his Knee Deep In Sound label, following the success of “Don’t Touch The Alarm” (Essential New Tune) and Okain & Cuartero’s “Cameleon”.

theo kottisArtist: Theo Kottis
Release: Waiting Game
Label: Moda Black
Genre: Dance

The year is 1999 and a young boy in oversized marching band attire, and majestic red Shako, clutches his beloved snare drum, playing like his life depends on it. His name is Theo Kottis and he’s keeping rhythm for the Philharmonic Orchestra in his childhood home of Thessaloniki in Greece. Fastforward 15 years and Theo, now living in Edinburgh, has swapped his shoulderstrap drum for drum machines and synthesisers, in a mission to cultivate his own futuristic sound.

Sometimes dark, sometimes uplifting, always emotiveÕĺ Theo is truly obsessive about his approach to music. As a DJ he‚Äôs already performed at Rockness, T In The Park, Hideout and Glasgow‚Äôs legendary Sub Club, and that‚Äôs purely down to his talents in the booth. Now, with a blossoming production career, Theo has found a whole new way to convey his passion for music and convert his wide range of influences and experiences into substantive club compositions

This EP demonstrates both sides of Theo’s nature. Founded on a bed of punching lowend drums Waiting Game is a bold and uplifting track that utilises chord progressions and a shimmering bell sequence to create an atmosphere that radiates his Summers in Ibiza. What Do You Feel, however, see’s Theo approach with a more strippedback aesthetic. Whilst his uncanny melodies remain central to the track, the overall feeling is darker and less immediate, slowly building the layers before an arpeggiated chord sequence provides the crescendo for this chilling slice of modern electronica.

Hot on the heels of his excellent Groove Armada remix, this is just the start of things with Theo Kottis and Moda Black. This Autumn he will join Jaymo & Andy George on several Moda Black tour dates, accompanying the likes of Fur Coat, Hot Since 82 and Richy Ahmed at dates in London, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Quantic-La PlataArtist: Quantic

Release: La Plata
Label: Tru Thoughts
Genre: World РSouth America

The third official single from Quantic‚Äôs immensely acclaimed ‚ÄėMagnetica‚Äô album is ‚ÄúLa Plata‚ÄĚ, featuring the Colombian singer Nidia G√≥ngora, an increasingly regular collaborator on record and in the live arena.

With lyrics written by G√≥ngora and Will ‚ÄúQuantic‚ÄĚ Holland‚Äôs buoyant musical backdrop, ‚ÄúLa Plata‚ÄĚ is a beautifully put-together song that speaks in Spanish on the universal subject of money and the positives and negatives it brings. ‚ÄúThere have been many songs about money,‚ÄĚ acknowledges Holland; ‚Äúbut I feel the way that Nidia communicates the theme is very unique, and very applicable to Latin America and its increasing class and wealth divide.‚ÄĚ

On the hugely successful ‚ÄėMagnetica‚Äô live tours of the UK, Europe and North America, the insistent rhythm section and immediately lovable vocal melody ‚Äď delivered in G√≥ngora‚Äôs luminescent folkloric style ‚Äď saw ‚ÄúLa Plata‚ÄĚ sending the crowds as wild as any classic Quantic cut, despite the fact it was the first time many had heard it.

The rhythm explored in ‚ÄúLa Plata‚ÄĚ is loosely based on Chirim√≠a, one of the musical genres of the North West Colombian state of Choco; on a visit to the Choco town of Nuqui, Holland and G√≥ngora found themselves captivated and inspired by the marching band-style snare and cymbal and duelling clarinets that make up the foundation elements of Chirim√≠a. ‚ÄúWe heard the local youth brass band play until the early morning, and got really into the music‚ÄĚ, Holland elaborates. ‚ÄúThe following year, we returned to Nuqui with film-maker B+, having written the song, to shoot the video to ‚ÄúLa Plata‚ÄĚ.‚ÄĚ

Alongside the ‚ÄúLa Plata‚ÄĚ Radio Edit and Album Version, the single unveils some killer new remixes of album tracks. Two contrasting reworks of ‚ÄúYou Will Return‚ÄĚ feat. Alice Russell come from Brooklyn based Ahmed Sirour and Tru Thoughts label mate Titeknots. The former‚Äôs subtly inventive slant strips back this worldly folk tale before spinning it out into an extended deep house cut abounding with atmospheric echoes and percussion; Titeknots turns out a playful club weapon for serious floors, demonstrating the crisp, melodic and unpredictable sensibility that have placed his own genre-defying house tunes in the sets and playlists of everyone from Tensnake and DJ Zinc to Lauren Laverne and Monki.
Another fast rising star of the Tru Thoughts stable, Werkha ‚Äď who has been heavily championed by Gilles Peterson and in-demand for tour support including Bonobo and Chet Faker ‚Äď brings a feast of bass and eccentric bleeps to the tropical rhythmic heat of the Nidia G√≥ngora-voiced ‚ÄúMuevelo Negro‚ÄĚ, for a sweltering UK summer.

The Young FolkArtist: The Young Folk
Release: The Little battle
Label: Pixie Pace records
Genre: Pop – Folk

Widely-tipped Irish alt-folk band The Young Folk will release of their debut album ‚ÄėThe Little Battle‚Äô follows the Dublin four-piece‚Äôs debut single ‚ÄėWay Home‚Äô, which received airplay from BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio Scotland, and the band‚Äôs first ever tour of the UK in May 2014.

Comprising of Anthony Furey (guitar, vocals), Tony McLaughlin (bass, mandolin, vocals), Paul Butler (keyboards, vocals) and Karl Hand (drums, vocals), nine of the ten songs on The Little Battle were written by Anthony and features songs about the fearlessness of youth (‚ÄėWay Down South‚Äô), self-doubt (‚ÄėI‚Äôve Been There Before‚Äô), making the most of a bad situation (‚ÄėSad Day‚Äô) and broken relationships (‚ÄėMy Friends‚Äô). The band‚Äôs recent single ‚ÄėWay Home‚Äô was inspired by Anthony‚Äôs time away from home on tour with father, George Furey of the legendary Irish band The Furey Brothers. The only song on the album not written by Anthony is the track ‚ÄėLetters‚Äô, written by The Young Folk‚Äôs keyboard player and vocalist, Paul Butler. A song about redemption, George Furey liked it so much he wants to record the song with his own band ‚Äď the ultimate compliment.

Hot Press described the band as ‚Äúserious challengers for the area populated by the likes of Fleet Foxes, Mumford and Sons and The Low Anthem.‚ÄĚ, while Dubliner Magazine labelled the band as ‚Äúone of the most promising young Irish bands of recent years‚ÄĚ.

In February of 2013 she released “Perspective” where she played all instruments and acted as producer.

see of treesArtist: Darko
Release: Sea of Trees
Label: Lockjaw Records
Genre: Alternative РPunk

Channeling the technical skill of Protest The Hero, the colossal choruses of Four Year Strong and the brutality of Slayer into a sound that’s got more in common with Pennywise, A Wilhelm Scream and Propagandhi, this lot specialise in melodic, fingertapped guitar intricacy woven into a balls out strain of skate punk. From Surrey’s green hills and predictable houses, something fun, chaotic, complex and noisy is snaking its way out, making a bee-line for your record collection.

the dotArtist: The D.O.T
Release: People Watching
Label: Mike Skinner
Genre: Dance РBeats & Breaks / Electronica

After almost a year, Mike Skinner and Rob Harvey‚Äôs The D.O.T have announced their highly anticipated return with excellent new single ‚ÄėPeople Watching‚Äô, set for release on 1st September through Skinner‚Äôs self-titled label.

The duo have reunited in the studio after a busy period working on their own projects. Harvey, of The Music fame, has been writing for a string of dance artists while Skinner has been founding his record label, Mike Skinner Ltd., DJ-ing and continuing with his photography and film experiments.

‚ÄėPeople Watching‚Äô follows ‚ÄėIn The Mirror You Can Only Kiss You Mouth‚Äô, which they posted online earlier this year, and is packed with all their characteristically catchy sound and banter. Harvey‚Äôs distinctive vocals take the lead role over Skinner‚Äôs accomplished production and subtle vocal cameos.¬†

Skinner‚Äôs new label is not only a channel for his own material but also for showcasing the talents of his favourite new artist Oscar #Worldpeace, who features on the B-side to the new single, ‚ÄėLess Than Tomorrow‚Äô. The track comes accompanied with a typically zany video, shot by Skinner using a drone helicopter in Japan, almost landing him a spell at Nagoya prison.¬†

With plans to release a new track every other month, alongside more videos and a forthcoming East London club night, you can expect to hear much more The D.O.T throughout the rest of the year.

spyArtist: S.P.Y
Release:  Back to Basics Chapter 2
Label: Hospital Records
Genre: Drum and Bass

The recent ‚ÄėBack To Basics Chapter 1‚Äô LP introduced a new edge to his sound, and having tested these tracks in his DJ sets over recent months, S.P.Y has fine-tuned mixdowns and structures for maximum dancefloor impact.

Returning for the second chapter, S.P.Y goes ‘Back To Basics’ and takes us deeper, darker and further underground with this uncompromising selection.¬†

S.P.Y brings in the iconic vocals of Diane Charlemagne once more & closest allies Total Science return to collaborate on this second edition, joined by Spearhead’s Bcee and well-renowned MC Lowqui.¬†

If any D+B artist can truly claim to be the “producers producer” then Carlos S.P.Y has as good an argument as any.

diggs dukeArtist: Diggs Duke
Release: The Upper Hnad & Other Grand Illusions
Label: Brownswood Recordings
Genre: Jazz- Fusion

The Upper Hand & Other Grand Illusions is a series of vignettes that tell a story of courtship and intimate interaction. It opens with a confrontation in “Forever Love Is Tainted”, focusing on the inner monologue of a man deceived. The song is a shot of reality, produced by Jelani Brooks to achieve a sound that is syncopated in melody, harmony, rhythm and texture. Each song thereafter documents a realization, “A Private Island” acting as commentary on the literal cost of getting to know someone. Drummer Terry Orlando Jones appears in great form here, and later on “Covered in Cloth”, an acknowledgement of the moment someone invites you to move in.

“The Pinnacle (of Class and Taste)” is the only song presented here that is created solely by myself, though it’s outside influences are quite obvious. It documents the bliss of the high point in its words and also in the fleeting sounds of the supporting production. At the project’s halfway mark, the unaccompanied voice of Carminelitta starts “Our Love Was Brand New” and sets the tone for a session of reminiscence wrapped in synths at every frequency. “Secrets Seem Rehearsed”, complimented by Jelani Brooks’ saxophone arrangement, addresses the fate of it all with a tone that cannot necessarily be classified as optimistic or pessimistic. It just is. And that’s the nature of the struggle for the upper hand.
