Believe New Releases w/c 27/10/2014

October, 27th 2014 20:12

the cheekArtist: The Cheek
Release:  Lover’s Quarrel
Label: The Lost Music Club
Genre: Alternative

The Cheek (formerly Cheeky Cheeky and The Nosebleeds) are Woodbridge’s finest indie export. With a frantic live reputation and a rabid cult following, their debut album was due in 2010 but never surfaced. The bloated major label machine that picked up the teen five-piece for a six-figure sum seemed to be spluttering to the end of its overblown life, and promptly dropped them. Not heard since, It’s finally available from The Lost Music Club, and it remains as fresh and vital as it did back then.

alice russelArtist: Alice Russell

Release: I’m the Man, That Will Find You
Label: Tru Thoughts
Genre: R&B

This digital double A-side single lifts the lid on a new recording – a beautiful cover of Connan Mockasin’s “I’m The Man, That Will Find You” – alongside an original album track, “Citizens”, which tapped into hearts and minds all over the world when it featured prominently on hit TV show The Blacklist. An equally heavyweight bonus cut comes in the shape of “Breakdown feat. Darondo (D-Felic Refix)”.

Amassing support from the likes of Lauren Laverne (BBC 6Music), Huey Morgan (BBC R2 & 6Music), Shaun Keaveny (BBC 6Music), Jamie Cullum (BBC R2) and right across the US tastemaker stations KCRW, KEXP, and WNYC to name just a few, Alice Russell’s ‘To Dust’ album has entranced discerning fans and tastemakers. Its fresh yet timeless sound, developed with long-term co-writer/producer TM Juke, heralded a new level of renown for this much loved artist, with achievements including BBC 6Music Album of the Day; sell-out tours across the UK, Europe and North America; and radio sessions including Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2) and 6Music Live At Maida Vale. Highlights also included her commanding set on Glastonbury’s West Holts Stage being recorded by the BBC for high billing on TV, radio and online, and Russell’s triumphant US Network TV live debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Amidst the whirlwind, spring 2014 saw Russell taking a brief break in order to embrace and devote herself to the new adventure of becoming a mother. Demonstrating the superhero powers that many have long suspected of her, Russell ventured back out onstage just six weeks after the birth of her daughter to delight the crowds at Love Supreme, WOMAD and other festivals around Europe, as well as packing four shows into two nights at Ronnie Scotts later in the summer. Having already tasted the festival life (and even made an unplanned appearance in the background on the studio recording of this single – listen up), the cherished Little Miss Russell will also be right by her magnificent mum’s side on the upcoming US tour.

Russell and TM Juke have proven time and again their ability to infuse a powerful soul sound with diverse influences, and on “I’m The Man, That Will Find You” those inimitable vocal harmonies sparkle as the pair pay homage to one of their favourite current artists, having had Connan Mockasin’s “Caramel” album on repeat for the last year. This fresh, spacious and psych-tinged sound also hints at a new direction that they are exploring on the way to developing Alice Russell’s next album.

The other new material here is a high energy, funky house-infused rework of “Breakdown feat. Darondo”, the original having been hugely feted last year when it was used to soundtrack the US Mad Men Season 7 trailer. The remixer is unmistakably D-Felic, the Netherlands-based producer and DJ whose growing reputation has led to recent collaborations with the likes of Om’mas Keith, Erykah Badu & Shafiq Husayn.

god damnArtist:God Damn

Label: One Little Indian
Genre: Rock

Released via One Little Indian (Asgeir, Bjork), Horus follows 2014 single Shoe Prints in the Dust and is a heavy hitting taster of their 2015 debut album.

translusionArtist: Transllusion
Release:  The Opening of the Cerebral Gate
Label: Tresor Records
Genre: Dance

In between the re-releases of the two legendary Drexciya albums released on Tresor in ’99 and ’01, the Berlin techno institute is proud to re-present Transllusion’s “The Opening Of The Cerebral Gate”.

Produced by the late James Marcel Stinson and released in 2001 via Supremat, a short-lived sub-label Tresor dedicated to a more abstract and experimental electro sound, “The Opening Of The Cerebral Gate” was conceived as the second part of the so-called Drexciyan Storms – a whopping stack of seven albums by the Detroit pair released under different monikers within a single year (the Tresor album “Harnessed The Storm” being the first).

This phase marks a groundbreaking time for the duo, their cosmos breaking wide open, right at the dawn of a new technological era in electronic music production. All this is deeply reflected in Transllusion’s first album.

Thematically, “The Opening Of The Cerebral Gate” saw Stinson shift away from the grand narrative of the Drexciyan saga, instead exploring a sub-plot of esoteric concepts revolving around internal, mental and psychedelic tropes. Musically, it presents the electro genius at the height of his game.

The album is chock full of hypercharged arpeggios and driving pulse patterns, morse-like tones and chord stabs, huge, ĂŒber-booming tympanic kicks and grainy snares, (see openers “Transmission of Life” and “War of the Clones”). On the other end of the stylistic spectrum it features sweeter tones and moments of sheer, staggering beauty (“Dimensional Glide” or the CD’s centerpieces “Look Within” and “Unordinary Realities”). In between, all kinds of alien electro funk shadings are to be found, every single track so well-executed making it impossible to pick a highlight.

“The Opening Of The Cerebral Gate” showcases one of the great artistic minds of techno’s second generation on the brink of a new creative chapter in his life – a chapter which, tragically, would end way too soon.

October, 23rd 2014 13:17

RBL Poppy Appeal Single

Along with partner Kartel, Believe Digital is thrilled to have been selected by The Royal British Legion (RBL) to support the release of this years’ lead asset throughout RBL’ s media campaign supporting the Poppy Appeal, the official single chosen and specifically recorded by Joss Stone and Jeff Beck, ‘No Man’s Land (Green Fields Of France)’.

The Royal British Legion is the UK’s leading service charity providing care and support to serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans of all ages and their families.  The Poppy Appeal is the Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign, last year raising ÂŁ39 million with a target of ÂŁ40 million for the 2014 Appeal. This year marks the one hundredth anniversary since the beginning of the First World War; the historic centenary is to be commemorated by a four-year programme of national acts of remembrance, UK-wide cultural initiatives and educational opportunities.

‘No Man’s Land (Green Fields Of France)’ was written  in 1976 by Scottish born folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle. Its chorus refers to two famous pieces of military music, ‘The Last Post’ and ‘The Flower of the Forest’.

The Royal British Legion’s Director of Fundraising, Charles Byrne said: “This is a wonderful tribute, inspired by two of our country’s greatest musical talents, Joss Stone and Jeff Beck. In partnering with Believe’s extensive digital distribution network and Kartel’s expertise in project management and physical distribution, we have every confidence the single will be a great success.”

Released as a joint-project, both Believe Digital and Kartel are working alongside The Royal British Legion to distribute the single digitally and physically. The 2011 Poppy Appeal single ‘Wherever You Are’, performed by the Military Wives topped the charts with over seven hundred thousand copies sold both digitally and on CD. Last year’s single was ‘The Call (No Need To Say Goodbye)’ by The Poppy Girls.

Lee Morrison General Manager UK & SVP Rights Management Believe Group commented: “We are thrilled to be working alongside the prestigious Royal British Legion and close business partners Kartel on this momentous campaign for a truly great cause. We’re honoured to help deliver a brilliant single from Joss Stone and Jeff Beck, one which will contribute hugely towards RBL’s Poppy Appeal and commemorate a significant one hundredth year anniversary.”

Believe New Releases w/c 20/10/2014

swindleArtist: Swindle

Release:  Walters Call
Label: Brownswood Recordings
Genre: Dance

Brownswood Recordings and Deep Medi are proud to announce the release of Swindle’s “Walter’s Call EP”.

Swindle – one of the most exciting, charismatic young producers coming out of the UK – received outstanding reviews last year in response to his album “Long Live The Jazz” where, according to XLR8R, “the South Londoner… settled into a brightly embellished, jazz-inflected style of dubstep”. He also played piano for the Mala in Cuba Live shows in 2012/13, a testament for his ability to waver between styles and genres impeccably. As well as this, Swindle holds a key role in the Butterz label and Collective, and has produced for the likes of Roll Deep and Footsie. Now well known for his dynamic live shows, Swindle’s sound is truly unique and constantly developing.

With ‘Walter’s Call’, Swindle dives straight in at the deep end with sirens and footwork inspired drums, gradually building themes of energetic brass brilliance into the mix. Seamlessly produced, this sets the EP off to a blazing start, introducing the influences of early 20th century chaotic jazz, which run throughout.

‘Summer Fruits’ is a track that begins with a gentle and disarming piano tune, swiftly developing into a lively melodic combination of well delivered vocal samples and prevailing brass rhythms. It gets your feet moving and renders the feeling of an easy sunny afternoon, with smooth harmonious flows combined with bursts of energetic flare resonating his influences.

Disjointed classic house piano chords kick off ‘Smash N Grab’, which again carries Swindle’s distinctive bouncing sound. At one point calm, then at the next in full swing, it’s just as much of a roller coaster as the rest of this smashing EP.

the pop groupArtist: The Pop Group

Release: Cabinet of Curiosities
Label: Freaks R Us
Genre: Alternative

“It’s one of those moments when the cogs of your mind shift and your life is going to irreversibly change forever” – Nick Cave on hearing The Pop Group for the first time.

The Pop Group, one of the most wildly innovative and barrier-shattering bands to emerge from the late ’70s post-punk era, are finally seeing their rare and fabled legacy reissued for the first time!

Cabinet Of Curiosities is a brand new, nine-track compilation which kicks off with the fractured future-funk single ‘Where There’s A Will’, described by Sager [guitarist] as “The group’s best attempt to mix a message with a groove plus some real free playing. If you are really unhinged you may be able to dance to this.” Next up is the unheard, original previously unreleased version of ‘She Is Beyond Good And Evil’, probably the band’s most infamous song and more recently covered by St Vincent on the Jimmy Fallon show and throughout her Strange Mercy tour.

Cabinet Of Curiosities continues with BBC John Peel session tracks ‘We Are Time’ and ‘Words Disobey Me’, and rounds up previously unreleased songs ‘Abstract Heart’ and ‘Karen’s Car’, plus other alternative versions. Mark Stewart describes Cabinet Of Curiosities as being of similar status to a lost Pop Group album.

The Pop Group was born in Bristol in 1977 out of a disenchantment with punk failing to bust out of its rock origins. With mystical fire, enraged by global injustices, the group delivered scathing political and society-indicting messages aboard a post-apocalypse roller coaster, ferociously straddling their beloved free jazz, conscious funk, heavyweight dub and audacious experimentalism.

batidaArtist: Batida

Release: Dois
Label: Soundway Records
Genre: Dance – Beats & Breaks / Electronica

“Slippery guitars of classic African dance-band music and a touch of pumping super-modern bass.” The Telegraph

Batida is to release his new album “Dois” via Soundway Records in early October. Strands of Afro-House, Kuduro, Benga, Semba, samples from old Angolan movies and Afrobeat tracks, African MCs and musicians from all over the world are all deftly mixed together by Pedro CoquenĂŁo.

Inspired by the multicultural hotbed of his home city of Lisbon and trips to Nairobi and Luanda, ‘Dois’ was predominately produced in his own garage-studio over a two-year period.

In 2012 Batida’s explosive self-titled debut came out on Soundway Records. Mixing the syncopated rhythms of Kuduro with elements of 1970s Semba and Congolese-influenced guitar licks, Pedro CoquenĂŁo won fans for an album that “demanded movement” (The Line of Best Fit) and “gave a view of the old and new, the West and Africa.” (The Guardian)

Much of the remix and sampling spirit from the first record remains but ‘Dois’ also features live instrumentation along with a host of different guests.

English, Portuguese, Quimbundo and Zulu languages all feature on ‘Luxo’ with Spoek Mathambo (South Africa) & his crew contributing the lyrics together with Angolan MC Sacerdote and a guitar riff by Duncan Lloyd (Maximo Park). On ‘CĂ©u’ CoquenĂŁo pushes things in a deeper direction, dis-assembling and reforming elements of the Francois & The Atlas Mountains studio sessions of the track ‘Les Plus Beaux’ .

His widely acclaimed live show, featuring dancers, MC’s, visuals and live electronics has seen him perform at Africa Express and on the Ten Cities project, live on the Boiler Room and all across Europe at some of the biggest festivals.

Anushka - Atom BombsArtist: Anushka
Release: Atom Bombs
Label: Brownswood Recordings
Genre: Dance – Beats & Breaks / Electronica

If Aluna George had abandoned synth-pop hope for jazz-tinged left-field waters, Anushka might well have been the result. sugary-sweet. bold, big and clever” – Q Magazine

Their songs bubble over with something extra at every turn” – AOTW, The Arts Desk

Brighton-based duo Anushka consist of Max Wheeler on the production and Victoria Port delivering sweet soulful vocals to the mix, culminating in a classic British concoction of jazz-inflected heady dance floor thrills. While Victoria’s melodies bring the sweetness, the tracks have the low-end weight to please DJ mavens like Karizma and Brackles on Rinse and Moxie and Annie Mac on Radio 1. Describing their sound as “vocal bass music from the future”, Anushka’s sound is firmly pushing boundaries of dance music, without forgetting past influences, as DJ MAG aptly put it; “playfully subverting the pop formula with modern electronic sensibilities Anushka remain both accessible and interesting.”

‘Atom Bombs’ is a key track from their album ‘Broken Circuit’, an explosive amalgamation of styles with seamlessly delivered soulful vocals ‘like Jill Scott or Erykah Badu going techno, with distant echoes of dubstep.’ (The Guardian).

The duo have taken Europe by storm this summer, performing at festivals all over the continent including Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival in SĂšte, France and Soundwave Festival in Croatia. Showcasing a number of incredibly soulful electronic tracks from their debut album “Broken Circuit” including their singles “Mansions” and “Never Can Decide”, Victoria Port’s sweet vocals alongside Max Wheeler’s expertly playful blending of jazz inflected beats all has the recipe for a great live show.

Honing their performance skills on stage and developing their sound further, they went back to record in the winter of 2012. Adding to this, three of their songs will be featured in the Imax

Pavel KarmanovArtist: Pavel Karmanov
Release:  Pavel Karmanov: Get In
Genre: Classic – Minimalism

There is more than one plot line in this selection of works by Pavel Karmanov. Works from different periods, dedicated to different occasions, are drawing a very recognizable portrait of the author. The author capable to transmit with his art such rare things in contemporary music as light, harmony and happiness, and doing this transmission act with an extraordinary consistency. Without strain, pathos, fake and mawkishness. Behind the apparent sterility and simplicity of tonality lies multifarious world, complex major and dissolving minor keys are even into a thin cunning ligature. “Yes, it turned out, I am becoming a more of a minor key composer eventually” – says the author. But it does not hinder the light, happiness and harmony. Some compositions are winking at us with their names: “Different Rains” vary only with one letter from “Different Trains” – famous work by classic of American minimalism, Steve Reich. But “Funny Valentine” is a nod to the popular jazz standard of 30s of the last century.

Pavel Karmanov – a popular Russian minimalist composer. At the age of five he began writing children’s plays. A graduate of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, member of the Moscow Union of Composers. His works have been performed by world-renowned artists, his music can be heard on the stage, in television shows and commercials on radio and TV. As a result of active cooperation with the leading Russian directors, he wrote soundtracks for documentaries and feature films. Pavel Karmanov – the constant participant of music festivals, such as “Moscow Autumn”, “Alternative”, «Sound Route 1999 Tokyo – Moscow» in Japan, the festival “Dialog “(Moscow, 1996), “Warsaw Autumn – 2005”, Shostakovich Festival in Seattle (2006). In 2013, he also wrote a new musical version of Alexander Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” directed on stage in Moscow by Yuri Lyubimov.
