Waves is a brand new compilation series profiling the best in cutting-edge electronic music. Curating tracks from forward-thinking labels such as Black Butter Records, Future Classic, Tru Thoughts, Bad Life, and Numerology Records, Waves, Vol.1 is mixed by fast-rising producer and DJ, Murder He Wrote.

Following releases on Skint Records, Wah Wah 45s, Numerology, and his own Kasenote imprint, Murder He Wrote brings his fresh approach and deft mixing skills to open the Waves compilation series. Having been handpicked by Benga and a team from the British Council to play Cape Town Electronic Music Festival and produce in Red Bull Studios earlier this year, Murder He Wrote’s had a busy 2014 producing numerous remixes and playing a selection of festival gigs (Soundwave Croatia), amongst releasing his own material which has picked up radio support from Radio 1, 1Xtra, Rinse, 6Music and NTS.

Expertly mixed by the Brighton based newcomer, Murder He Wrote winds through blissful electronic beats from Lost Midas, Fakear, Sailor & I, Qtier, and PyrĂ©nĂ©es, before he steps up the groove with cuts from Lucatwana, Bodhi and heavier hitters from Black Butter’s Gorgon City, Eats Everything and Kidnap Kid. sounway
Release: Music from Planet Earth: A Soundway Collection
Label: Soundway Records
Genre: World

‘Music from Planet Earth’ is compilation of music selected from some of Soundway Records’ current roster of active artists. More than ever in 2014 the moniker ‘world music’ seems redundant. A term used to lump everything that isn’t from a certain place or sung in a dominant language into one category that receives less attention from nearly all mainstream music media is an unhelpful one to say the least.

Soundway Records aims to support new (and old) music that doesn’t always fit into a convenient genre. That could be a band based in London formed of musicians from 6 countries making hybrid pop music sung in a Nigerian dialect. It could be music made in South Africa by five people of completely different age, race and background. It could be synth-funk sung in Spanish and English by a New York native of Cuban heritage. It could be made by an English producer who hooked up with purveyor of psychedelic cumbia from Bogota and put together a super-group of Colombian session players. Or an Angolan-born Portuguese producer based in Lisbon working with MCs, dancers and musicians from Nairobi, Luanda and Newcastle. A collective of Aucklanders with backgrounds as diverse as Nigeria, Trinidad and Sudan rocking crowds and making music in New Zealand. Surrealist Electronica with Arabic vocals from Brittany by way of Brooklyn or Spanish / Sri Lankan experimental sound textures forged late at night in Camden Town.

Call it anything, we might not have the answers just please stop calling it ‘world music’.

havana cultura
Release:  Havana Cultura Mix: The Soundclash
Label: Brownswood Recordings
Genre: World

‘In 2009, there was ‘Gilles Peterson Presents Havana Cultura’ followed by a remix album. After that ‘The Search Continues’ (2011) and then ‘Mala In Cuba’ (2012). Now we have ‘Havana Cultura Soundclash!’, a compilation of collaborations between Cuban vocalists/musicians and unsigned artists from around the world.

All projects have brought musical exchanges to Cuba – with its illustrious yet traditional music scene – a nation where rhythms (salsa, rumba) exist as the lifeblood of its people; where access to new music is limited, barely any broadband internet service and decent home studio technology is rarely affordable. Despite this, Havana boasts a solid homegrown hip-hop scene and vibrant nightlife ruled by reggaeton, with house, techno, EDM, dubstep, trap and moombahton breaking through.

Besides, cultural exchanges are the essence of electronic music. Cuban rhythms (especially Afro-Cubano) trace back to the heart of dance music – from disco through to Chicago house and beyond – cross-pollination is what keeps it moving forward, so what’s wrong with bringing electronic music to a nation that in a way helped birth it?

This is what ‘Havana Cultura Mix - The Soundclash’ is all about. After sieving through thousands of entries to a remix competition, 10 artists from all over the world (UK, Germany, Hungary, Holland, South Africa, Russia, Switzerland, Chile and Cuba) were selected by Gilles and his Brownswood production partner Simbad to travel to Cuba to work in the studio with hand-picked singers, rappers, percussionists, brass and key players to put together an album.

The result is 12 tracks that not only shine a spotlight on electronic artists to watch, but showcase untouched talent within a tropical, vibrant place such as Cuba; a rare window into this enchanting country with a slow economy characterised by rum, vintage cars and cigars.

Shining through on the album from Cuba is the spine-tingling star quality of Daymé Arocena and the ferocious rap quality of Barbaro and El B. Elsewhere there are stunning diva harmonies from Sexto Sentido and the supple male vocal chords of Los Niches, while a range of ambidextrous Cuban instrumentalists, from collectives like Interactivo, can be heard spilling rhythms and spraying melodies all over each and every record.

From the electronic side, there’s the UK funky touch of Rukaiya Russell and footwork soul of Russia’s Raumskaya; the refined production sensibility of Chillum Trio (Hungary) and rambunctious riddims of South Africa’s Seu Seppie as well as house, trip-hop, trap, minimal tech funk, distorted dubstep and more from noi5er (Chile), Teipah (Chile), Kerkstra (Holland), DJ MonoKey (Germany), Merlin Cornu (Switzerland) and Kike Wolf (Cuba).

In combining these two worlds – the preservation of Cuba and the innovative realm of electronic music – Gilles, Havana Cultura and their artists not only twist traditional forms to create something new, they give musical evolution a little nudge forward in the process.

Hollingbury Hawks Under-8 team: In for the win!

November, 14th 2014 17:51

The Hollingbury Hawks under-8: A busy young team!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the Believe sponsored Hawks.

First, the National Mini Soccer Cup final at Wembley in London where they got to touch the FA cup – yes the real FA cup (!) and the England teams kits in the dressing rooms. That made for an inspirational day!

They had an excellent first game winning 4-1 but sadly lost the second game 3-2 to a very physical but talented side from Bolton.

Moving on to the following week, it was clean sheets as Hawks beat Lewes Bridge Orange team in two games. The results were 5-0 and 7-0, an excellent display all round.

Prior to the game, the boys observed a minute of silence in respect for Remembrance Sunday on November 9th and conducted themselves impeccably.

We are very proud at Believe to see our young team wearing their shiny new kits, displaying Believe and our partner sponsor BozBoz.

Congratulations boys, keep it going!

Believe Recordings’ Releases 10/11/2014

November, 11th 2014 17:03

jvmArtist: James Vincent McMorrow

Release: Post Tropical (Deluxe Edition)
Label: Believe Recordings
Genre: Alternative

““So sonically audacious, visually stunning and meticulously modern as to recall Kanye West” The Times *****

“Profound and unexpected…a singular style that barely sounds as if it’s from this world” Mojo ****

“With its deliberate, languorous pleasures, this is an album to live with, settle with and be crisply rejuvenated by” Pitchfork

“A richly textured, hip-hop influenced odyssey” Esquire

James Vincent McMorrow has premiered a brand new song, ‘You Know’, the latest piece of new material following critically-acclaimed second record ‘Post Tropical’ along with the announcement of a deluxe version of the album which will include previously unreleased material, remixes and live tracks being released this autumn. Released in January, ‘Post Tropical’ has since been made Album Of The Week at Radio 1 and 6Music, was voted an album of the year by readers of The Guardian, and has seen a sold-out European tour (including a London show at the Barbican). Following slots at Latitude, Coachella and Sydney Opera House (which he sold out twice), McMorrow headlines Shepherds Bush Empire on October 5 as part of an extensive European and US run of dates heading into the end of this year. James also made a recent guest appearance at Duke Dumont’s debut live show at London’s Oslo (the two have recently collaborated in the studio).
Both ethereal and warm, soulful but still, ‘You Know’ is a tribute to McMorrow’s life-long love of classic hip-hop and R&B, which can be felt across early singles ‘Cavalier’ and ‘Gold’, and contribute to the general reinvention of ‘Post Tropical’. The album title, much like the idiosyncratic ‘You Know’, is deliberately “warm and familiar, but there’s something there that’s maybe not quite what you think it is.”
A deluxe edition of Post Tropical will be released digitally on 10th November, which will include the full standard album plus the following bonus material:
1. When I Leave (bonus track)
2. You Know (bonus track)
3. New Romancers Ft. Moors (bonus track)
4. Red Dust (live / solo version)
5. All Points (live / solo version)
6. Cavalier (1975 remix)
7. Cavalier (DPAT remix)
8. Glacier (Atu remix)
Having since been released to widespread acclaim, ‘Post Tropical’ follows James Vincent McMorrow’s platinum-selling debut album, ‘Early in the Morning’ – which also reached number 1 in Ireland, picked up a Choice Music Prize nomination, and led to breakout hit ‘Higher Love’. ‘Post Tropical’, however, was recorded in just three weeks on a pecan farm half a mile from the Mexican border (which the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House and Animal Collective have all called home). James recently uploaded some new works-in-progress (notably the Hype-Machine-topping ‘When I Leave’), suggesting that – whatever ‘Post Tropical’ actually is – there might just be more on the way.

bretonArtist: Breton

Release: War Room Stories (Deluxe Edition)
Label: Believe Recordings
Genre: Alternative

”The group serves as a reminder to the fact that guitar music – indie, really – is still relevant, and still deserving of our undivided attention.” CLASH

”Dancefloor-friendly and just the right side of leftfield.” The Guardian

Creative electronic five-piece Breton return with two new songs, ‘Titan’ and ‘Parthian Shot’, to accompany the reissue of their highly-rated LP ‘War Room Stories’, set for release on 10th November 2014 on their own label Cut Tooth via Believe Recordings.

Devised while touring Europe with Local Natives and Foals in 2013, the brand new material will appear alongside the original ‘War Room Stories’ and exclusive bonus tracks. The two new tracks are a telling demonstration of both Breton’s range of influences and their command of their medium. ‘War Room Stories’ artfully employed the Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra, whilst the new tracks were produced by processing live instruments into samplers using Native Instruments Maschine — the hip-hop beatmaker’s hardware of choice. Lead vocalist Roman Rappak describes his love of the technology: “One of the things we love about guitars is that they are pure chaos, and never sound the same way twice. So a sampled guitar is this exact moment of chaos, repeat perfectly. It feels like the exact middle ground between a guitar band and a producer project.”

Roman explained that ‘Titan’ is “about feeling connected to a building, or it being part of your life, and then having it taken away.” It’s a bittersweet slice of indie as stark synth chords and vocals are tied together with a delicate background of violin strings. Co-produced by Antoine Gaillet, whose credits include co-writing M83’s ‘Before the Dawn Heals Us’ and mixing on their masterwork ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’, his collaboration with them was a pleasure for the band: “He is incredibly interesting to work with, because he has this instinct for a balancing things that are captured in a studio as a live recording with an almost scientific level of production detail.”

Taking inspiration from an old Iranian military tactic of the same name – a manoeuvre of great skill where a rider would turn around on his horse while retreating and fire a deadly shot at their pursuing enemy – ‘Parthian Shot’ is described by the band as “the most cinematic thing we’ve made for ages.” An early chorus is teased but withheld before samples of crowd footsteps are mixed with sombre piano and guitar which fade into a drum machine beat backed by choir samples and heartfelt vocals from Rappak. “It’s the last track we’ll release for a while,” explains Roman, making the track a symbolic Parthian Shot of their own.
Breton’s reputation as a must-see act comes from their initial performances in squat parties and in their South London all-purpose base – dubbed BretonLABS. Initially performing live because it was more practical to project their film work behind them at music venues, the band quickly developed a dedicated following, with their intense live shows travelling by word of mouth to music journalists, who purposely travelled to Elephant and Castle’s old Natwest bank building to meet the band.

After closing themselves off in Funkhaus, a broadcasting building located in the industrial Mitte district of Berlin, to produce their second album, the band’s mass communication medium has led to their gracing the stages of Europe’s biggest festivals. Vielles Charrues, Rock am Ring, Ibiza Rocks and the world renowned Pitchfork Festival in Paris have all hosted Breton’s intense and visually striking live performances.
The physical Deluxe Edition of ‘War Room Stories’ comes in a limited edition double CD featuring previously unseen tour pictures and a much coveted PDF of all the band’s lyrics to date ¬– revealed in print for the first time in one collection. To promote the release of the Deluxe Edition of ‘War Room Stories’, Breton are embarking on a European tour ending with a much anticipated homecoming gig at London’s Heaven on the 2nd December.

Collaborating on this new album with Bill Ryder-Jones (The Coral), it is a marked departure from her 2012 debut ‘Uncut’ – stripping back and laying bare the beautiful song-craft of an artist clearly in her prime. The result is a selection of twelve delicate and heart-felt, folk-infused tracks woven into ‘In The Seams’ – full of lush strings, softly plucked guitars and tender vocals.
