Chet faker - Built on glassArtist: Chet Faker
Release: Built On Glass
Label: Future Classic
Release Date: April 11th, 2014
Picked by: Nick Parry¬†–¬†Digital Marketing Manager UK

Future Classic have had yet another incredible year of releases, with the biggest of the lot coming from everyone’s favourite Aussie bearded-maestro Chet Faker. Neatly following up his¬†debut Thinking In Textures¬†EP, Faker delivered¬†his first full-length – one that bowled over fans and critics alike with it’s style, class and undeniably catchy soulful pop¬†productions. As good on record as it is live,¬†Built On Glass¬†portrays Faker’s love of jazz, soul and dance music into a remarkably enjoyable and absorbing 50 minute listen. Chet¬†may be one of Austraila’s finest exports and most definitely my favourite record (and beard) of the year.” – Nick

Release: Vidal Benjamin présente Disco Sympathie
Label: Versatile records
Release Date: November 17th, 2014
Picked by: Victor Joly¬†–¬†Label manager

“Vidal Benjamin is one of the most brilliant and¬†interesting French-disco crate-digger. This compilation is perfect for discovering rare and weird French-disco¬†from the early 80s, and to give a rebirth to these forgotten and unknown¬†mysterious artists. It can souns a bit old fashioned and easy at the first listen¬†but the power of these tracks remain in the¬†originality, the smoothness and the simplicity of these happy songs !”

rhapsode

Artist : Forever Pavot
Release : Rhapsode
Label : Born Bad Records
Release date : November 10th 2014
Picked by: Etienne Guy ‚Äď Project Manager Strategic Marketing

“A funny story about this guy is that I met him totally randomly during a wedding this summer. We got some wine and a cigar and started talking about his music…¬†He‚Äôs also a talented video director who worked for Dizzee Rascal.¬†I‚Äôm not particularly fan of psychedelic rock but I love the honesty of this album. It‚Äôs real psyche music, in 2014, with great production / recording.¬†Please take an hour to listen it with respect.¬†It ¬†has¬†also been released on one of my favorite labels, Born Bad.¬†Let‚Äôs stay faithful to independent music.” – Etienne

saint saviour

Artist: Saint Saviour
Release: In the Seams
Label: Surface Area
Release date: October 31st 2014
Picked by:¬†Ben Rimmer –¬†Head of Label Management UK

“Previously lead singer with The RGBs as well as Groove Armada, when fronting and co-writing the singles on the Grammy nominated album ‚ÄėBlack Light‚Äô, Becky Jones ‚Äď aka Saint Saviour ‚Äď returned with one of the most beautiful and understated albums of 2014. Following the 2012 solo-debut ‚ÄėUnion‚Äô, Saint Saviour collaborated with composer and The Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones for the follow up ‚ÄėIn The Seams‚Äô. The result is 12 deeply personal and stripped-back tracks with softly plucked guitars and the Manchester Camerata Orchestra providing lush strings that allow Becky‚Äôs stunning vocal to come to the fore. Single ‚ÄėLet It Go‚Äô is an addictive, if sad, highlight while later album gems such as ‚ÄėA Word‚Äô and ‚ÄėNobody Died‚Äô catch faster in your mind on every listen without ever grating. Deserving of repeated headphones moments.” – Ben

lost midas

Artist: Lost Midas
Release: Off the Course
Label: Tru Thoughts
Release date: July 28th, 2014
Picked by: Victor Conradsson –¬†International Training and Key UK Account Manager

“This year¬†I’m torn between a summer & a winter album…¬†although¬†both came out in June/July 2014 ! So I will nominate the one with the most acute sense of release timing ūüôā –¬†Lost Midas having¬†revealed¬†over the first part of¬†the year the various tracks which cast a¬†replenishing¬†halo on the early summer days, along the course of one of the best release strategy I had the pleasure to work on.¬†Tru-Thoughts had found the producer¬†in L.A.,¬†gravitating in the Brainfeeder circles, and dully signed his magnificent chill-pop-wave-whatever productions, which went to form a cohesive and exhilarating whole on his first album Off The Course. The world needs to pay attention because Jason Trixaglis can bring much beauty to the party, as he trails forward in the footsteps of people like Royksopp, Chrome Sparks¬†or Flume. And I highly recommend¬†you have¬†a listen to that recent rework of Off the Course by Seshen.” – Victor

Captain Sinbad

Artist: Captain Sinbad
Release: Reggae Music Will Mad Unu !
Label: Maximum Sound
Release Date: February 10th, 2014
Picked by: Stephen King¬†–¬†Chief International Officer

Frenchie came up with the goods on his Maximum Sound imprint at the start of 2014 ‚Äď with Captain Simbad – Reggae Music Will Mad Unu ! album.¬†Reggae Music Will Mad Unu heralds the return of a legendary Jamaican pioneer from the early days of dancehall, when artistes like Yellowman, Sugar Minott and Barrington Levy dominated reggae charts in England and the Caribbean. Like them, Captain Sinbad made his reputation on local sound-systems before transferring his talents to the studio. Captain Sinbad‚Äôs first recordings since the early eighties, and yet his lyrical skills and flow still sound remarkably fresh. The results prove this masterful dee-jay has lost none of his powers, and that he remains just as relevant as when he first came to fame in his youth. A great addition to the ever growing Maximum Sound catalogue.”
