one-derfulArtist: Various Artists

Release: The One-Derful! Collection: Mar-V-Lus Records
Label: Secret Stash Records
Genre: Funk & Soul

“For You My Love” is a sliver of all the earmarks found rampant in Chicago’s soul scene. We’re talking about funk at it’s core, with a crunchy gospel exterior…” – Okayplayer

The second installment of the One-derful! Collection focuses on Mar-V-Lus. The imprint started with the intense soaring vocals of Johnny Sayles, before expanding to teen and dance oriented tracks from Alvin Cash, The Du-Ettes, Madeline & The Young Folks, motown styled group like the Blenders and the Ultimations, and hard soul songstress Josephine Taylor including 11 tracks that have never before been issued!

Central to Mar-V-Lus is the Leaner family. By 1963 when brothers George and Ernie Leaner added Mar-V-Lus as a sub-label to their One-derful! label, they were revered figures on Chicago’s Record Row and beyond. They distributed material from labels like Motown and Stax and they attracted top talent. It wasn’t uncommon for a WVON DJ to help the Leaners sign their newest discovery, or for their singers, musicians, songwriters, or producers to have Chess or Motown on their resumes.

Nearly 20 years prior, George and Ernie started work at their sister’s Groove Record Shop. Before long, George was an assistant to legendary blues producer Lester Melrose, and later the brothers helped run Parkway Records – recording historic 78s featuring Little Walter and Muddy Waters. They did all of this before launching United Record Distributors in 1950 – regarded as the nation’s first black owned record distributor. In addition, their uncle Al Benson was the most influential Radio DJ on Chicago’s South Side. His on-air support and occasional partnerships with the Chess brothers proved crucial to their early success. He also helped many DJs get their start, including Vivian Carter who later formed Vee-Jay Records. In fact, United Record Distributors hosted her wedding. The Leaner name also turns up in connection with many of the greats in blues and soul: George Leaner produced an early release for Berry Gordy’s Tamla label, and in the 1970s Ernie Leaner and Stax’s Al Bell partnered to form Ernie’s Onestop and a chain of Record World stores. The Leaner family were among the most important black businessmen of music’s golden era, yet much of their history has only been superficially documented until now.

Between 1962 and 1971, the One-derful! family of labels released 180+ 45s of stunning soul, funk, and gospel. Secret Stash spent over two years of painstaking research and work, including countless hours spent cataloging, transferring, and mastering 250 of the label’s tapes, for this exhaustive 6 volume reissue program.

japeArtist: Jape

Release: This Chemical Sea
Label:  Faction Records
Genre: Dance

‘If you’re looking for music that’s emotionally engaging, texturally lush, loaded with detail, adventurous in spirit and melodically rich, then Jape are worthy of your time.’
Drowned in Sound

‘The strong hooks bring you in and the downbeat material creeps up on you.’
The 405

The prolific Richie Egan returns with Jape’s fifth studio album ‘This Chemical Sea’, available from January 26th on Faction Records.

Revered by critics and fans alike in their native Ireland, Jape is the only act to have received the Meteor Choice Award for best Irish album twice: for their third album ‘Ritual’ (2008) and their last full length effort ‘Ocean of Frequency’ (2011).

On this LP, Jape have tangibly honed their sound, and written what the band calls ‘the first album which has a uniquely ‘Jape’ sound from start to finish, a type of gothic pop with lyrics of unusual depth.’ The record combines the mindset of genre-bending music that the band have always been admired for with a strict adherence to a pop format. It incorporates a nod to some of Egan’s biggest experimental influences (Voices from the Lake, Raymond Scott, The Microphones), but never veers away from placing the songs firmly within the frame of the pop genre.

The hooks throughout the LP are strong and resonate above the bouncing keyboards, particularly on the record’s lead single ‘The Heart’s Desire’. The Peaking Lights remix of the track, which premiered on The Line of Best Fit and received coveted airplay on Huw Stephens’ show, takes the song’s irresistible melodies and lets them flow for seven minutes, highlighting the band’s talent for penning an irresistable chorus.

The record’s strengths are enhanced by the skilful mix of David Wrench, who has worked with the likes of FKA Twigs, Caribou, and Jungle. The powerful melodies are nurtured, but never at the expense of the stunning instrumentation on tracks such as album opener ‘Seance of Light’, where the synthesisers shimmer and shine on a sea of deep electronic bass lines, along with other album highlights ‘Love on the Crest of a Wave’ and ‘Absolutely Animals’.

Following an extensive tour of Australia and Europe, Egan relocated to Malmo, Sweden in 2012, where he found a studio to write and record the majority of the new record. Egan explained his intention was to ‘make a coherent album that was a pure expression of my inner thoughts.’ Far from an insular process however, this was the first time somebody else was let in on the creative process. The tracks would be shared with fellow band member Glenn Keating for feedback, something Egan feels ‘was inspiring and helped me to push myself so much harder.’

Further adding to the collaborative aspect of the album, mercury prize nominated Villagers’ frontman Conor O’Brien features on the LP’s penultimate song ‘Ribbon Ribbon Ribbon’. However, regardless of outside influence, Egan also manages to demonstrate his penchant for taking inspiration from the personal, such as in the staggeringly beautiful final piano line of ‘Breath of Life’. This was written the same week his mother fell extremely ill, and its melody is something he believes reflects the ‘magical quality of music and its ability to induce memory’’.

As a man who has worked in many bands prior to, and alongside, Jape (The Redneck Manifesto, Villagers, David Kitt), Richie Egan has an impressive back catalogue of work, but ‘This Chemical Sea’ may well be considered his greatest achievement thus far. It is a compelling pop record with all the attributes of an album which will last well beyond its 2015 release.

anushka kissesArtist: Anushka
Release: Kisses
Label: Brownswood Recordings
Genre: Dance

“If there was ever a definitive sonic interpretation of a massive sugar rush, then “Kisses” is undoubtedly it.” – Noisey/Vice

Anushka’s 3rd single ‘Kisses’ taken from their debut album Broken Circuit will be out on the 19th of January. The package will include this version with Trim and a remix from Dark0.

Brighton-based duo Anushka consist of Max Wheeler on the production and Victoria Port delivering sweet soulful vocals to the mix, culminating in a classic British concoction of jazz-inflected heady dance floor thrills. While Victoria’s melodies bring the sweetness, the tracks have the low-end weight to please DJ mavens like Karizma and Brackles on Rinse and Moxie and Annie Mac on Radio 1. Describing their sound as “vocal bass music from the future”, Anushka’s sound is firmly pushing boundaries of dance music, without forgetting past influences, as DJ MAG aptly put it; “playfully subverting the pop formula with modern electronic sensibilities Anushka remain both accessible and interesting.”

The duo took Europe by storm in summer 2014, performing at festivals all over the continent including Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival in Sète, France and Soundwave Festival in Croatia. Showcasing a number of incredibly soulful electronic tracks from their debut album “Broken Circuit”, Victoria Port’s sweet vocals alongside Max Wheeler’s expertly playful blending of jazz inflected beats all has the recipe for a great live show.

orlando juliusArtist: Orlando Julius

Release: Back to My Roots: The Very Best of Orlando Julius
Label: Orlando Julius Afro House of High Life
Genre:  World – African

Orlando Julius is one of the heroes of Nigerian music. A saxophonist, singer and songwriter, he began fusing African influences with American R&B and soul in the 60s, and was a major influence on Fela Kuti and Afrobeat.

After serving an apprenticeship in Dr I.K. Dairo’s band Julius formed his own band, Orlando Julius and His Modern Aces and made his mark by being one of the first artists to blend the multiple guitars & horns of highlife with American R&B and soul. His sound, which laid the groundwork for the popularization of ‘afropop,’ was cooked up at his club residency in Ibadan, Nigeria during the 1960s and mastered in his 1966 Super Afro Soul LP. Following the rapturous reception of that album in his homeland, his success began to grow and he managed to obtain a record deal with Polydor Records to record across Germany, London and Switzerland. After returning to Nigeria, OJ famously met and performed with The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, in 1969, with both men making a firm impact on each other’s sound. In 1974, OJ moved to the States where he would begin a new chapter with a new band called Umoja. During the 70’s and 80’s, OJ collaborated with international stars including Hugh Masekela, Lamont Dozier, and The Crusaders.

Despite all this Orlando’s music went largely unnoticed on the international stage, that is until the year 2000, when ‘Super Afro Soul’ re-released by UK label Strut to widespread acclaim. Crate-digger Frank Gossner followed with a repress of OJ’s 1972 album ‘Orlando Julius & The Afro Sounders’ on his own Voodoo Funk label. Since then, Orlando has embarked on numerous tours all over the world and in early 2014, UK psych-jazz band The Heliocentrics brought him to their studio in North London, where they backed him in a series of recordings that became the acclaimed album ‘Jaiyede Afro’, released in September 2014 on Strut.

Ahead of his 2015 European tour OJ has compiled original recordings of many of his best tunes for this best of compilation.

meat waveArtist: Meat Wave

Release: Brother
Label: Brace Yourself Records
Genre: Punk

“An invigorating blast of sleazy, snarling noise punk” – The Guardian – November 2014

“…will have you seeking to mosh at the soonest convenience.” – The Line of Best Fit

Meet MEAT WAVE, a Chicago trio who play insanely catchy punk rock. The band’s chemistry between Chris Sutter (vocals, guitar), Joe Gac (bass) and Ryan Wizniak (drums) propels their songs with undeniable force and charisma. ‘Brother’ is a raw, under-two-minute romp and the video’s stuttering images echo the song’s claustrophobia & restlessness. ‘Brother’ is backed here on the ‘Brother EP’ by 6 other slices of crucial pop-punk, including the vicious, swaggering ‘Sham King’.

Sutter, Gac and Wizniak found each other in 2011, all twenty-something participants of the local Chicago scene. The three released a self-titled album in 2012 with the help of Hawthorne Street Records (home to Pelican, Sweet Cobra & others). Meat Wave’s sinister bass lines, maniac drumming and fuzzed out guitars draw from influential post-punk bands like Hot Snakes as well as Chicago pillars Jesus Lizard and Naked Raygun.

As one fan described them on Bandcamp earlier in 2014, Meat Wave are “snotty and radical and explosive – like sneezing while eating pizza”. Chow down!

Out this week: Drewford Alabama

January, 7th 2015 11:08

Title: The Life & Times of Drewford Alabama
Artist: Drewford Alabama
Label: Ninjas & Wolves
Release Date: 05/01/2015

Billed as a musician whose talents span the simultaneously infinite and finite genres of folk and Americana; Drewford Alabama certainly knows how to strut his stuff to the sound of the old country.

On new song “Water”, Guillemotsfront man Fyfe Dangerfield joins the project, which is somewhat uncharacteristically fronted by onetime Noisettes and sometime Stereophonics band member Jamie Morrison. Don’t back away too quickly – there’s little here to hint at the epic rock of Morrison’s past ventures. In fact, “Water” presents the perfect troubadour pairing for a song that welcomes in the spring, albeit a little early for some.

In a further move for the mysterious, apparently the project was formed Morrison found himself flipping through a book penned by the allusive character of Drewford Alabama, 1943-1951: “The book intrigued me so much it didn’t leave my sight. I continued reading throughout the following weeks. I had fallen in love with the songs. It was as if the lyrics were written for me and where I was at that time.”

“Water” is taken from the forthcoming debut EP from Drewford Alabama, The Life & Times of Drewford Alabama, due for release on 5th January 2015 through Ninjas and Wolves.
