jona sul albumArtist: Jona Sul
Release: Neighbourhood
Label: Southern Fried Records
Genre:  Dance

Southern Fried records are kicking off the New Year with an exciting new talent in the form of Brighton’s Jona Sul. ‘Neighbourhood’ will be his first EP for the label and is sure to be the start of a fruitful new relationship that finds the imprint focussing on artist and album projects going forward.

Brighton’s Jona Sul is an artist who crafts proper songs and someone who has the potential to conjure up coherent, full length musical journeys. It stems from years of producing all types of music and playing in bands; from submerging himself in influences a world away from 4/4 and from a passion for field recordings and free flowing experimentation. What’s more, his sensitive sound lends itself to immersive live shows where true narrative sits alongside dance floor clout.

The first cut here is the title track, a shimmering, emotive affair with shuffling drums, lots of glistening electronics and magical synths and wordless vocals that lend a celestial air to the reflective grooves. Think Four Tet and you’ll be in the right sort of ball park for this beautiful debut.

The second cut ‘Long 20’s’ is a little more direct, with pained vocal ad libs stretched out over lazy, tumbling drums, sombre chords and expertly crafted synth patterns that get treated and played like real instruments. It’s a fresh sound, expertly produced and appeals as much to heart and head as it does to heel.

This EP marks the start of what is sure to be a fine career for this bright new hope.

hindsightsArtist: Hindsights
Release: Cold Walls / Cloudy Eyes
Label: Beach Community
Genre: Alternative

Four-piece Berkshire alt-rock outfit Hindsights release their debut album ‘Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes’ on 23rd February 2015 through UK indie label Beach Community. The album was recorded over two weeks in June 2014 at HQ Studios in Manchester with Bob Cooper (Nai Harvest, Self Defence Family, Brawlers). Additional production and help with tracking the record came from Tom Richfield, credited in the recording of the Departures/Moose Blood split EP and also on Hang The Bastard’s album.

Expansive and cathartic, you can hear the band’s struggles and turmoil within the highly fraught ten tracks that comprise ‘Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes’. That being said, they don’t shy away from poppier sensibilities with the catchy refrains shining through the complex musical textures.

The emotion invested in Hindsights’ music and lyrics more than comes across in the band’s heartfelt live show. Stay tuned for live dates in 2015.

sundara jpgArtist: Sundara Karma

Release: EPI
Label:  Believe Recordings
Genre: Alternative

‘Shimmering riffs that could start a heatwave. Sublime’ – NME

‘We can all cheer that the band is now out of school, so that they can totally focus on creating more of these enchantingly addictive gems.’ – The Line of Best Fit

‘Sounding sweetly anthemic with every build and release’ – Earmilk

‘Sultry, full-bloodied indie pop from four seriously promising teens.’ – The Sun

Following on from the single ‘Indigo Puff’ in October, Reading four-piece Sundara Karma are now set to release their brilliant debut four-track EP ‘EPI’ on February 23. From the hugely anthemic EP opener ‘Loveblood’, to the Foals-esque rhythms of ‘Waves’, the whole EP soars with thundering synths, shimmering guitars and a confidence that belies their years.

Live wise Sundara Karma start 2015 strong with dates with The Wombats, Alvvays and Darlia, along with their own headline EP launch show at the Sebright Arms on March 10 (full live dates listed below).

Formed by Oscar Lulu (vocals), Haydn Evans (drummer), Ally Baty (guitarist) and Dom Cordell (bassist), the 18-year-old school friends have gone from figuring out cover versions to writing their own sunkissed, uplifting indie-pop. In 2012, after making the BBC Introducing playlist with their ear-ly track ‘Freshbloom’, they were selected to play two of the UK’s biggest festivals at Reading and Leeds. This led to a support tour with Swim Deep which culminated with a huge show at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. Their previous singles ‘Cold Heaven’ and ‘Indigo Puff’ have caused a wave of interest in the band seeing them gain radio support from the likes of Zane Lowe, Phil and Alice, Huw Stephens, Jen and Ally, XFM Evening Playlist and Amazing A List. Having now finished school the band are now full time working on making the band a success.

With their innate knack for writing solid pop hooks, an infectious sense of fun surrounding the group and some interesting, unconventional methods of inspiring and grabbing the attention of their audi-ence, this is a young band to watch.

Genre: Alternative

Little Comets release their highly anticipated third album ‘Hope Is Just a State of Mind’. mumdanceArtist: Mumdance, Logos

Release: Proto
Label: Tectonic
Genre:  Dance

* Mumdance & Logos present Proto, Tectonics first major release of 2015, set for release on 16th February.

* Recorded by the duo over 2014, Proto is a collection of 10 future-facing club tracks that, against the odds, also provides a deep and involving experience for the listener.

* ‘Proto focusses on the very brief sparks of innovation when new scenes were just forming and genre rules and paradigm were still grey areas; the early bleep track days when imported American techno was starting to be appropriated by the UK, the 93-94 proto era when hardcore was morphing into jungle and later when the darker sound of tech-step reared its mechanical, dystopian head.

* All of this is underpinned with Wot U Call It grime sensibilities and Mumdance & Logos trademark sonic disortientation. Mumdance & Logos concentrate on taking the moods and colours created by these leaps forward in sound and twisting them into something new; keeping in line with the futuristic visions of the originators.

* Both producers had a banner 2014, launching their new label Different Circles and spearheading a movement of spatially untethered club trax coined Weightless. Mumdance took up a residency on Rinse FM, went B2B with Tectonic boss Pinch on their acclaimed mix release (no one else is putting music together quite like this – RA 4/5) before being selected for RBMA Toyko. Logos, aside from appearing with the Boxed crew across London, had a new track Metropolis top Keysound stable comp Certified Connections and had 2013s debut Cold Mission LP checked in FACTs 100 best albums of decade so far.

Previously releasing first official single “Old Habits” to take a slight diversion,

four owlsArtist: The Four Owls
Release: Natural Order
Label:  High Focus Records
Genre: Hip Hop

Whether as a collective or on their individual merits, the reputation of The Four Owls cannot be messed with, nor questioned, now more so than ever. With the imminent release of their second album entitled ‘Natural Order’, The Four Owls are perched, ready to swoop in for the kill, and in true Owl fashion, the prey (the listener) will have no idea what hit them.

As classic as it was, it
seems their first record, the wildly popular ‘Nature’s Greatest Mystery’, was simply a stepping stone to this point, luring in the listeners to what certainly is the next level, and true of all great predators, by this point its too late to escape.

As one would expect the four seasoned MC’s, Fliptrix, Leaf Dog, Verb T & BVA all deliver the goods. Now a tightly knit unit after a few years on the road together, their chemistry on and off stage is unparalleled, and their conceptual approach is sharper than ever.

Tackling subjects from
assassinations, heartfelt confessions, to prejudice and karma to absolutely everything in between the Owls have produced one of the most cohesive albums in recent times, hitting the nail on the head with each track. Carrying on the tradition begun on ‘Nature’s Greatest Mystery’, label mates Dirty Dike and Jam Baxter both make appearances once more, newcomer Smellington Piff is also added to the mix.

The album is jam packed to the brim with that soulful sound, Leaf Dog leaves no
stone unturned production wise, proving to be a true master of his craft, and has created an album that unfolds like a classic… Like all REAL classics past, present and future; the legendary DJ Premier is involved in some shape or form. High Focus Records is proud to announce that this album is no exception to the golden rule, as the colossal ‘Think Twice’ is produced by the man himself, serving as the cherry on top to to this modern day masterpiece.

The Four Owls are Hip Hops top predator and they are here to restore the ‘Natural Order’ amongst the chaos.

motsa 2Artist: MOTSA

Release:  Time
Label: Southern Fried Records
Genre: Dance

Viennese producer Varerio Dittrich aka MOTSA has been building a sterling reputation over the last year with his unique take on bass driven electronic music.

Remixes for Sasha’s Last Night on Earth label and a track on his Mixmag covermount, a ‘Top 50 tracks of the year’ inclusion from Beatport, and an appearance at Red Bull Music Academy’s Bass Camp have all come in a short space of time. Now he is set to join the highly respected Southern Fried Records imprint for the release of ‘Time’, early in 2015.

The EP kicks off with the subtley soulful ‘Digital World’, a delightful broken beat excursion into a melodic, bass fuelled soundscape. Skittering drum patterns, funk laden keys and swirling vocal cuts morph together to form a track with real depth and feeling and showcase the producers undoubted talent from the off.

Next up we have ‘Time Goes On’, an ethereal fusion of FX drenched piano stabs, rumbling sub bass and uplifting vocals that springs to life with an effortless musicality. Hypnotic and heartfelt, the record shows’ the influence of Dittrich’s time on the UK bass scene, whilst living in Scotland some years back, but also transcends any simple pigeonholing with it’s elegant production and rich textural pallet, quality stuff.

Penultimate cut ‘Clocks’ sees MOTSA team up with MIMU for a vocal led affair that is as smooth and seductive as you could want, awash with warms pads and deep bass.

The package is closed with the wonderful ‘Time Out’ which takes a rougher and tougher approach with it’s sawtooth bass and steppin’ percussion. Synth stabs, pianos and vocal snippets all bring an atmospheric quality to the mix and the end result is a perfect final offering for this stunning EP.

Southern Fried Records have hit a perfect note once again with this latest offering from the highly promising MOTSA.

eoneArtist: Eone
Release: Theia
Label: Numerology Records
Genre:  Dance

We’re extremely hyped and more than a little proud to welcome back Eone to Numerology for his 2nd EP. ‘Theia’ builds on the soundscapes and ethereal textures showcased in ‘Dispersion’ back in 2013 with an increasingly refined technique and ear for detail.

Opening up the offering is ‘Retribute’ a brooding slow burner that drops haunted vocals over huge evolving synths and intricate layers of percussion. ‘Continue Comme Ca’ steps up the pace with Eone’s unique chordal landscape complimented with a footwork inspired drum pattern and catchy vocal refrain.

Remixes on the EP come from deep house maestro Leigh Morgan who takes the vocal from ‘Retribute’ and works it into a tripped out dancefloor groover. Renowned Brighton joker/producer Mitch Wade Cole takes on ‘Continue Comme Ca’ with an infectious rework and ridiculously groovy bassline.

vesselsArtist: Vessels
Release: Echo In
Label: Bias

The transformation is complete. After four years of incremental musical evolution, Vessels emerge with a brave and brilliant new sound, masterfully fusing the widescreen builds and elegant breakdowns of their previous work with altogether more physical electronic rhythms. With Echo In and their hotly anticipated new album Dilate, Vessels are firmly focused on the euphoria of the dancefloor. The transition from sky-scraping guitars to fluid electronics has been almost seamless. What makes it all the more remarkable is that every bit of it is played live.

jonny faith sundialArtist: Jonny Faith
Release:  Sundial
Label: Tru Thoughts
Genre: Dance

“This guy’s music is rooted in hip-hop but oozes cosmic sensibility” –
“buoyant yet adventurous, subtle yet not without directness” – CLASH

2nd February sees the release of Jonny Faith’s debut album, ‘Sundial’, following the “Zheng”/“Slumber” single, and draws on a wide range of musical influences from the past and present. Jonny has crafted his own individual sound overflowing with intricate percussion and lush, organic tones.

Originating from Edinburgh, but now based in Melbourne, Faith gained his ear for rhythm and sound as a DJ and turntablist spinning hip hop, jungle and D&B, both in the UK and Australia, for some years. After a while, like many DJs, he turned his hand to his own productions and sound. Faith’s early music had a strong dub and reggae tinge, with one early single release coming under the alias Dropwise Dubs through the Sydney based Foreign Dub imprint. Although dub sensibilities and production techniques still underpin Faith’s style he moved into the hip hop future beats scene with aplomb hosting both a radio show and club night in Sydney dedicated to the emerging experimental beats sounds sweeping the globe.

In 2011 Faith took this instrumental hip hop tip in his own direction with his “Blue Sky on Mars” EP for Civil Music. Adopting a strong, galactic, synth based theme for the project, this first offering featured sci-fi samples, futuristic beats and remixes from the likes of Ital Tek and Dizz 1.

Today, Jonny Faith’s sound has grown into a warm and emotive experience summed up by his debut full length album forthcoming on Tru Thoughts. Entitled ‘Sundial’, this first LP is a rich tapestry of individual sonic threads, expertly crafted into a single form. Intended as a full, feature length work rather than throw away, standalone tracks it is one to plug in to and digest from start to finish.

Future projects from Jonny are set to expand upon his worldly, cosmic sound and incorporate even wider influence from across the universe.

quanticArtist: Quantic
Release: Painting Silhouettes
Label: Tru Thoughts
Genre: Dance

Out 2nd February, “Painting Silhouettes” is the fourth official single from Quantic’s ‘Magnetica’ album, which came out in May to acclaim across the board for its diverse and thrilling combination of sounds from around the globe, all tied together by the impeccable production of Will “Quantic” Holland. The digital release also brings a brand new Shigeto Remix of previous much-loved single “Duvido” feat. Pongo Love.

“Painting Silhouettes” is in many ways Holland’s most deeply personal song to date. In addition to stepping out as a singer, on this album Holland for the first time played the banjo left to him by his late father, an accomplished folk musician; his father had in fact played it on a Quantic track a decade ago (“So Long”, from the ‘Mishaps Happening’ album), but Holland had not yet picked it up. “The time felt right”, he explains, “to experiment with getting back involved with these English sounds, the music of my parents and my sisters; having been exploring so much from African and Latin American music, it was nice to bring something back into it that was a bit more homegrown”. His array of multicultural influences – from Angola, Jamaica, Colombia and beyond – was all the more immersive when channelled into ‘Magnetica’ alongside Holland’s exploration of the English folk music of his own upbringing.

But just as Quantic is not best known for being a folk singer-songwriter, “Painting Silhouettes” is not the average folk ditty; probably best aligned with the sound of Nick Mulvey, another worldly sonic weaver, it takes the listener on a multi-layered and luminous trip. “It came together in BogotĂĄ, late at night, over a few months”, says Holland. “I knew it would be emotional, with a lot of different thematic threads, different arpeggios – a lush arrangement. I wasn’t sure how it would end up, though, and I imagined it going somewhere with a lot more beats and electronics. But in the end I didn’t even put bass on the track, because I was happy with it.”

Never one to neglect the tropical bass lovers, however, on this single Quantic also unveils “Duvido feat. Pongo Love (Shigeto Remix)”, which sees the Ghostly International-signed producer and drummer Shigeto reworking Quantic’s early 2014 dancefloor-rocking single into a deep, late night cut. Pitching down the original Angolan-Portuguese vocals of Pongo Love, heightening the bass and polyrhythmic percussion and weaving in a mass of ethereal chimes makes for an enthralling, slow building and ultimately thunderous club tune.
The other remix in this digital release comes from Ben Sun and follows releases on Delusions of Grandeur, Voyeurhythm & Love Fever Records. Ben flips ‘Duvido feat Pongo Love’ into a striking take on modern house and boogie. Maintaining the pulsing rhythm, he distills this up tempo party cut into an early hours wash of rising synth lines.
