Artist: Mungo’s Hi Fi

Release: No Wata Down Ting
Label: Scotch Bonnet Recordings
Genre: Reggae

Some of the most outstanding contributions on Mungo’s Hi Fi multi-artist projects have come from Ipswich lyricist YT. So it was only a matter of time before they collaborated on a full album together. The theme is real, undiluted reggae music. YT and Mungo’s share a passion for the often overlooked 80’s rub-a-dub and early dancehall sound. The stripped down riddim tracks allow YT’s strong, melodic delivery and intelligent lyrics to take centre stage. YT doesn’t flinch from life’s harsh realities and tough questions. Yet he is also sufficiently well- grounded to breathe new fire into staple topics like sound clash and ghetto romance.

Release: Violator
Label: Indie Recordings
Genre: Black Metal

Second album from Vredehammer, fronted by Valla (also known from Abbath)

Metal-Temple gave it 10/10 “It is exceptionally rare for me to award an album with a perfect score, but this stunning opus deserves no less.”

Artist: Human Fortress
Release: Thieves Of The Night
Label: AFM Records
Genre: Heavy Metal

German epic melodic metal band HUMAN FORTRESS delivers another strong album, titled “Thieves Of The Night”, on March 18th. Two years after the group had returned to the style of their successful first releases from the early 2000’s with “Raided Land” – and also introduced new vocalist Gus Monsanto (ex- Timo Tolkki’s Revolution Renaissance, ex-Adagio) – HUMAN FORTRESS continue right where they left off. Songs such as the catchy title track, power metal hymns („Rise Or Fall“, „Vicious Circle“) or the slightly modern – but not less epic- „Thrice Blessed“ will amaze every fan of the Hannover-based band. But “Thieves Of The Night” additionally could appeal very well to worshippers of Virgin Steele’s 80’s/90’s classic releases, Kamelot and Avantasia.

March, 11th 2016 09:03

Artist: Gavin James

Release: Bitter Pill
Label: Good Soldier
Genre: Singer Songwriter

On his way to becoming one of 2016’s international crossover-stories, 23-year-old Gavin James was born in Dublin and inspired by local heroes like Damien Rice and classic, grafting Soul artists such as Sam Cooke, he would play Dublin’s pubs virtually 7 nights a week during college, in a marathon of 3-hour shows. Gavin James’ own material then began to draw an impassioned following: his first ever single won Ireland’s answer to the Mercury (the Choice Prize for ‘Song Of The Year’), stayed on the charts for over 6 months and culminated with 2014’s #1-charting, ‘Live at Whelans’ album. That night, he happened to perform an impulsive cover of The Magnetic Fields’ ‘The Book Of Love’, accelerating Gavin’s word-of-mouth success story (the track has since become a platinum-selling hit around Europe).

Artist: Gilles Peterson’s Havana Cultura Band
Release: Havana Club Rumba Sessions
Label: Brownswood Recordings
Genre: Dance

Produced in collaboration with rum maker Havana Club – creator of the Havana Cultura platform to promote contemporary Cuban culture – this is another episode in a six-year relationship that’s already given vital exposure to different aspects of Cuba’s thriving music culture through the Havana Cultura album series. Peterson worked with the island’s esteemed rumberos to record authoritative versions of the three rhythms as well as discuss what differing meanings and origins are attached to each. The recordings of rumba’s three key styles were handed to a crop of producers working in the orbit of the most interesting corners of club music, allowing for an exciting, global re-interpretation of rumba’s roots.

Artist: Laura J Martin
Release: On The Never Never
Label: Shape Records
Genre: Indie Pop

A chance conversation with Lambchop’s Matt  Swanson and Tony Crow proved fruitful and they planted the seeds of an idea in Martin’s head that “recording in Nashville and working with Mark Nevers was a real possibility”. Swanson and Crow join the all-star band for ‘On The Never Never’ alongside Silver Jews’ Brian Kotzur on drums and The Jesus Lizard’s Duane Denison reviving Fame-era Jimmy Johnson on electric guitar. Shot through with wit and humour alongside the sociopolitical themes – one of the characters talks of bleaching toilets and taking trips to Lanzarote – ‘On The Never Never’ skips through waltz timings, bears influences from Scott  Walker to the Compass Point Allstars and picks up a guest vocal from Benjamin Zephaniah along the way. With ‘On The Never Never’, Martin has produced a hopeful record, full of joy, beauty and tongue in cheek looks at those in charge.

Artist: Muncie Girls

Release: From Caplan To Belsize
Label: Specialist Subject
Genre: Alternative Punk

After an impressively prolific start, releasing EPs and splits every year since their formation, Muncie Girls is finally gearing up for the release of their first full-length via Specialist Subject Records (UK), Uncle M (EUR) and Animal Style (US) in 2016. The album¹s title, a reference to Sylvia Plath¹s The Bell Jar, perfectly compliments the themes found on the album coping, healing, and shedding restraints. Musically, the album is a dynamic and emotional exploration of punk and indie rock. The album’s bouncy catchiness is sure to be a hit with fans of Hop Along, Lemuria, Latterman, and RVIVR, but one of the defining characteristics of Muncie Girls is their ability to explore outside their immediate influences.

Artist: The Qemists
Release: Warrior Sound
Label: Amazing Record Co.
Genre: Rock

The Qemists are, in many ways, something of a Qonundrum. They’re rock kids seduced by the dancefloor, dance kids equally happy playing live instruments or building tracks on the computer, drum & bass aficionados who believe their hurtling breakbeats sound best under muscular metallic riffs.

On paper, such a sound clash seems like a train wreck in the making. However, pumped as loud as your speakers will allow, or booming through the PA at their live shows, The Qemists make glorious sense.

Artist: Holy Esque

Release: At Hope’s Ravine
Label: Beyond The Frequency
Genre: Alternative

Glasgow’s Holy Esque announce the release of their long-awaited debut album At Hope’s Ravine, released February 26th 2016 via Beyond The Frequency.

At Hope’s Ravine is the debut album by Holy Esque. It is a primal, muscular, and utterly elemental work – a true epic in an era when such an epithet is overused. Here, bold is beautiful and the Glasgow quartet’s messages of hope and grief, escape and yearning are writ large across sonic skies. This is epic 21st century music occasionally reminiscent of Boy-era U2, early Simple Minds and Echo & The Bunnymen or perhaps more contemporary bands such The National, The Walkmen, Interpol and Titus Andronicus.

Artist: Bullion
Release: Loop The Loop

Artist: Jeremy Loops
Release: Trading Change
Label: Jeremy Loops
Genre: Folk

Juxtaposing booming city rhythms with lilting folk, Jeremy Loops perfectly captures the duality of his South African life. The extremes aren’t new to the singer, who by day travels to the furthest corners of Africa to battle deforestation through his organization, Greenpop, and by night resumes as raconteur for raucous fans around the world.

In a whirlwind 2014 and 2015, Loops debuted at #1 on iTunes in South Africa, won the MTV Best Pop Alternative 2015, headlined major festivals, and maintained #1 on the three most prominent radio stations in Southern Africa with “Down South”, his breakout single.

Artist: Lea Lea

Release: Die Pretty
Label: Gothic Luau
Genre: Pop – Rock

Her name is Lea Lea and we’re excited to introduce you to ‘Die Pretty, Volume I’ the anticipated follow up to her self titled album.

“Die Pretty Volume 1” is an intersection of where Led Zeppelin meets Kelis, where Janis Joplin meets Santogold. Inspired by Lea Lea’s electrifying and critically acclaimed performances she wanted to mix things up for this EP; take things back to basics, get her band in a studio, crack open some tequila and record everything live. Produced again by the mighty Jack Baker (Bonobo, Alice Russell), they set out to create a raw sounding Psychedelic Rock Pop EP. Embellished with thunderous beats and bold vocals that climax into a Robert Palmer like wail and explosive rifts.

Artist: Dan Sartain
Release: Century Plaza
Label: One Little Indian Records
Genre: Alternative

Staring out from the cover with (non-artificially) blackened eye, paranoid android Dan Sartain goes back to the future for Century Plaza a new album of darkly nuanced electro-pop, released via One Little Indian on 19th February.

While Suicide and Alan Vega have long been acknowledged influences (a cover of Wipeout Beat features) Century Plaza finds Sartain trolling the British synth-pop wave of 80-84 particularly Depeche Mode – for inspiration, opening the record with a funereal remake of Walk Among the Cobras.

Artist: Flats and Sharps
Release: King Of My Mind
Label: Move Your Hands
Genre: Folk

Far from the archetypal bluegrass band, the five-piece’s new album, which consists of 11 originals and 3 covers, is an accomplished collection of genre-busting tracks.

Recorded in the wonderfully isolated Deep Litter Studio at Start Point, South Devon in August 2015, ‘King Of My Mind’ was the culmination of five years spent honing their performance and songwriting skills. This came to fruition in the recording process where, alongside award-winning producer David McEwan (Plan B), the album took just five days to complete.

The album explores love, lost love, death, escapism and idealism in equal measures, with the fresh songwriting styles and vocal delivery of lead members Mikey Ponsford and Kirk Bowman.

Artist: Paride Saraceni
Release: Burning
Label: Truesoul

Paride Saraceni’s debut Truesoul release, ‘Burning’, brings us three uplifting and vocal-heavy tech house tracks. A steady groove throughout, Saraceni’s choice of instrumentation and flowing percussion create a melodic yet techy release with all three tracks laced with a solid kick drum, tinkering high hats and sporadic vocals. ‘Burning’ is the perfect offering for the new year and proves there are big things on the horizon for Saraceni.
