nozeArtist: Noze

Release:   Come with Us
Label: Circus Company
Genre: Dance

Parisian duo NĂ´ze return with their fifth album Come With Us, moving further into introspective song writing capped off with their unmistakable eccentric flair. Featuring guest vocalists Dani Siciliano and JAW, the LP moves between well-travelled blues and warm 70s electronics with a strong story-telling tradition at its heart. NĂ´ze have also remixed the whole album as a nod to their dancefloor roots, creating a dubbed-out, beat heavy counterpoint to the refined musicianship of the main release.

club kuruArtist: Club Kuru

Release: All The Days
Label: Believe Recordings
Genre: Hip Hop

Bristol-born, London-based producer and songwriter Club Kuru emerged last year, enjoying an instantaneous wave of online support for the lush sounds and accomplished songwriting showcased on debut tracks ‘All The Days’ and ‘Seesaw’. He will release his anticipated debut ‘All The Days’ EP on 27th April through Believe Recordings on vinyl and digital download.

Club Kuru is the moniker of Laurie Erskine, a classically trained pianist who combines his expert songcraft and musicianship with progressive production skills mixing live elements alongside the electronic. The result is a fresh, sleek EP laden with emotive nostalgia.

quanticArtist: Quantic

Release: Spark It
Label: Tru Thoughts
Genre: World

This effervescent dancehall-inflected cut “Spark It” sees Quantic’s production come together with the charismatic flow of reggae legend Shinehead. The two hooked up in LA when they both happened to be visiting the city, for a one-off recording session. “I’m a big fan, so it was an amazing opportunity”, says Holland; “The session was short, but he just nailed it. Every time the record button was on, he’d give a million different versions. He was really vibey, very easy to make records with.”

In addition to the original LP version there is an exclusive Quantic Dub of “Spark It” plus a pair of killer remixes from Ghost Writerz and Ed West. The digital single also features a bonus cut: “Painting Silhouettes (Todd Simon’s Painting Flugelhorns Edit)”, a horn-led reimagining by celebrated trumpeter and arranger Todd Simon, of Quantic’s last single.

kerri wattArtist: Kerri Watt

Release: You
Label: 25 Hour Convenience Store
Genre: Pop

Rising Scottish singer-songwriter Kerri Watt returns this April, with her new EP, ‘You’ – the follow up to last year’s acclaimed debut ‘Who’s Lovin’ Me Now?’

Out again on 25 Hour Convenience Store – the record label from The Libertines drummer Gary Powell, ‘You’ is a development on the Californian pop sound showcased on the first EP, with a step forward in terms of production and songwriting – it’s the sound of an artist finding her sound. “The songs work better together as a collection, and I think they demonstrate my sound in a more cohesive way,” says 22 year old Kerri.

Kicking off with the classic sounding lead single, ‘You’ Kerri delivers with building guitars, soulful vocals and an anthemic chorus in which she confidently declares she’s not turning back – “It’s about my weakness for creative types” confides Kerri. “The passion that comes with two creative people, but also the frustrations of feeling like just temporary entertainment. It’s about breaking free from that.” Next is the rock-driven ‘Got My Heart’ about falling for someone hard, whilst there’s also the addictive ‘Paris’, a live favourite from her recent Nina Nesbitt support tour, about romance on the road, and the summer soaked ‘Maybe’ – closing the EP.

fyfe controlArtist: Fyfe

Release: Control
Label: Believe Recordings
Genre: Alternative

‘Control’ is a collection of brooding, expertly-crafted alternative pop songs, from an artist and producer who has already earned fans as diverse as London Grammar to Childish Gambino (and over 2 million Soundcloud plays to boot). For 25-year-old Paul Dixon, it’s a record which may have started as an exercise in tightening one’s grip on life, but is effectively about release, and learning that control itself is a fallacy.

free loveArtist: Fantasma
Release: Free Love
Label: Soundway Records
Genre:  Dance

“Spoek Mathambo and Dj Spoko’s band is totally amazing!” Dazed Digital

“The electro-Zulu supergroup represents the best of South African music.” – THUMP/Vice

Fantasma, the latest project of South African innovator and creative pioneer Spoek Mathambo, is a five-man collective which weaves together electronica, hip-hop, traditional Zulu maskandi music, shangaan electro, South African house, psych-rock and punk to form a unique, original and fresh hybrid.

The godfather of ‘Bacardi House’, producer DJ Spoko joins with former Machineri guitarist André Geld- enhuys, drummer Michael Buchanan and maskandi multi-instrumentist Bhekisenzo Cele to complete the line up.

Fused by Spoek Mathambo’s futurist vision, Fantasma pulls inspiration from all corners of South Africa: the sounds and spirits of townships and cities as well as the rural countryside. It is diverse not only in its membership but also in its forward-looking music.

dj yoda presentsArtist: DJ Yoda Presents: Breakfast of Champions
Release: DJ Yoda Presents: Breakfast of Champions
Label: Get Involved Records
Genre: Hip Hop

DJ Yoda will release his new album ‘Breakfast Of Champions’ on April 27 2015 through Kartel/Believe Digital. Curated and produced by DJ Yoda, the album features an eleven-strong collective of UK MCs and musicians, including Rex Domino and Mouse Outfit members Sparkz & Truthos Mufasa. The release will be trailed by a new single ‘The Baddest’ (now streaming here), ahead of an audio-visual headline tour in March, kicking off at Manchester’s Band On The Wall on March 13 and London’s The Forum on March 14.

Duncan Beiny, aka DJ Yoda, is no ordinary scratch DJ – and fittingly, this year’s realisation of his Breakfast of Champions project is far from being a predictable move. Energised by the wealth of starry collaborators (including Action Bronson, Boy George & Roots Manuva) for his acclaimed second artist album, 2012’s ‘Chop Suey’, Yoda elected for his next project to look in the opposite direction – towards upcoming artists of the UK scene, assembling the Breakfast of Champions cast from a Who’s Who of hip-hop’s next wave.

MonarchyArtist: Monarchy

Label:  Hacan Sounds
Genre: Dance

“less of a comeback than it is an explosion, shattering all expectations in spectacular form.” Neon Gold

Monarchy is Andrew Armstrong and Ra Black.

Both originally from Australia, the synth-pop duo met in London, and began making music together in 2009.

Monarchy released their debut album in 2011 with the singles Love Get Out of My Way, Maybe I’m Crazy, and You Don’t Want to Dance With Me and remixes from the likes of Benny Benassi, Tim Goldsworthy, Azari and III and Bag Raiders. They remixed such acts as Ellie Goulding, Lady Gaga, Kelis, Kylie, OMD, Jamiroquai, Fyfe Dangerfield and more.

Over the last five years they have played across the globe, at festivals such as Coachella, Melt, Lovebox, The Big Chill, Low Cost, Arenal Sound, and their own headline shows and club gigs in the US, Spain, Germany, UK, France, Russia.

After seeing Monarchy’s performance at Coachella in 2011, burlesque star Dita Von Teese got in touch with the band and the song Disintegration featuring Dita was eventually born from the relationship. This marked the first time Dita had ever recorded vocals on a track. This song went on to become their first single from their forthcoming album.

In June 2014 they released their second single, Living Without You through Sony US/Ultra, which was described by Neon Gold as: “less of a comeback than it is an explosion, shattering all expectations in spectacular form.”

With an exceptional video and MK remix, the single was championed by Pete Tong and charted on Beatport.

Monarchy released their latest EP titled Almost Human backed by a fan-generated official music video.

psb albumArtist: Public Service Broadcasting

Release: The Race For Space
Label: Test Card Recordings
Genre: Alternative

Public Service Broadcasting are pleased to share their eagerly anticipated new album The Race For Space – due Feb 23rd 2015 via Test Card Recordings.

Granted unique access to historically important films from the BFI, PSB go back in time and explore the period when the USA and USSR fought to gain the upper hand in a new frontier – space.

The record follows the release of their acclaimed debut album Inform – Educate – Entertain in 2013 which reached #21 in the UK album chart, was nominated for Best Independent Album at the AIM Awards and included in BBC 6Music’s Top 10 Albums of the Year. 18 months’ extensive touring across the world followed with over 200 shows in support of the album. Highlights included audiences queueing round the block at their showcase at The British Music Embassy @ SXSW, the band wowing festival audiences up and down the country including Glastonbury, Bestival, Green Man and many more, selling out countless headline shows (London’s Forum, The Mercury Lounge in New York & Lanificio in Rome to name a few) – not to mention supporting the likes of The Rolling Stones, New Order & Manic Street Preachers.

jona sul albumArtist: Jona Sul
Release: Neighbourhood
Label: Southern Fried Records
Genre:  Dance

Southern Fried records are kicking off the New Year with an exciting new talent in the form of Brighton’s Jona Sul. ‘Neighbourhood’ will be his first EP for the label and is sure to be the start of a fruitful new relationship that finds the imprint focussing on artist and album projects going forward.

Brighton’s Jona Sul is an artist who crafts proper songs and someone who has the potential to conjure up coherent, full length musical journeys. It stems from years of producing all types of music and playing in bands; from submerging himself in influences a world away from 4/4 and from a passion for field recordings and free flowing experimentation. What’s more, his sensitive sound lends itself to immersive live shows where true narrative sits alongside dance floor clout.

The first cut here is the title track, a shimmering, emotive affair with shuffling drums, lots of glistening electronics and magical synths and wordless vocals that lend a celestial air to the reflective grooves. Think Four Tet and you’ll be in the right sort of ball park for this beautiful debut.

The second cut ‘Long 20’s’ is a little more direct, with pained vocal ad libs stretched out over lazy, tumbling drums, sombre chords and expertly crafted synth patterns that get treated and played like real instruments. It’s a fresh sound, expertly produced and appeals as much to heart and head as it does to heel.

This EP marks the start of what is sure to be a fine career for this bright new hope.

hindsightsArtist: Hindsights
Release: Cold Walls / Cloudy Eyes
Label: Beach Community
Genre: Alternative

Four-piece Berkshire alt-rock outfit Hindsights release their debut album ‘Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes’ on 23rd February 2015 through UK indie label Beach Community. The album was recorded over two weeks in June 2014 at HQ Studios in Manchester with Bob Cooper (Nai Harvest, Self Defence Family, Brawlers). Additional production and help with tracking the record came from Tom Richfield, credited in the recording of the Departures/Moose Blood split EP and also on Hang The Bastard’s album.

Expansive and cathartic, you can hear the band’s struggles and turmoil within the highly fraught ten tracks that comprise ‘Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes’. That being said, they don’t shy away from poppier sensibilities with the catchy refrains shining through the complex musical textures.

The emotion invested in Hindsights’ music and lyrics more than comes across in the band’s heartfelt live show. Stay tuned for live dates in 2015.

sundara jpgArtist: Sundara Karma

Release: EPI
Label:  Believe Recordings
Genre: Alternative

‘Shimmering riffs that could start a heatwave. Sublime’ – NME

‘We can all cheer that the band is now out of school, so that they can totally focus on creating more of these enchantingly addictive gems.’ – The Line of Best Fit

‘Sounding sweetly anthemic with every build and release’ – Earmilk

‘Sultry, full-bloodied indie pop from four seriously promising teens.’ – The Sun

Following on from the single ‘Indigo Puff’ in October, Reading four-piece Sundara Karma are now set to release their brilliant debut four-track EP ‘EPI’ on February 23. From the hugely anthemic EP opener ‘Loveblood’, to the Foals-esque rhythms of ‘Waves’, the whole EP soars with thundering synths, shimmering guitars and a confidence that belies their years.

Live wise Sundara Karma start 2015 strong with dates with The Wombats, Alvvays and Darlia, along with their own headline EP launch show at the Sebright Arms on March 10 (full live dates listed below).

Formed by Oscar Lulu (vocals), Haydn Evans (drummer), Ally Baty (guitarist) and Dom Cordell (bassist), the 18-year-old school friends have gone from figuring out cover versions to writing their own sunkissed, uplifting indie-pop. In 2012, after making the BBC Introducing playlist with their ear-ly track ‘Freshbloom’, they were selected to play two of the UK’s biggest festivals at Reading and Leeds. This led to a support tour with Swim Deep which culminated with a huge show at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. Their previous singles ‘Cold Heaven’ and ‘Indigo Puff’ have caused a wave of interest in the band seeing them gain radio support from the likes of Zane Lowe, Phil and Alice, Huw Stephens, Jen and Ally, XFM Evening Playlist and Amazing A List. Having now finished school the band are now full time working on making the band a success.

With their innate knack for writing solid pop hooks, an infectious sense of fun surrounding the group and some interesting, unconventional methods of inspiring and grabbing the attention of their audi-ence, this is a young band to watch.

Believe Recordings’ Releases 10/11/2014

jvmArtist: James Vincent McMorrow

Release: Post Tropical (Deluxe Edition)
Label: Believe Recordings
Genre: Alternative

““So sonically audacious, visually stunning and meticulously modern as to recall Kanye West” The Times *****

“Profound and unexpected…a singular style that barely sounds as if it’s from this world” Mojo ****

“With its deliberate, languorous pleasures, this is an album to live with, settle with and be crisply rejuvenated by” Pitchfork

“A richly textured, hip-hop influenced odyssey” Esquire

James Vincent McMorrow has premiered a brand new song, ‘You Know’, the latest piece of new material following critically-acclaimed second record ‘Post Tropical’ along with the announcement of a deluxe version of the album which will include previously unreleased material, remixes and live tracks being released this autumn. Released in January, ‘Post Tropical’ has since been made Album Of The Week at Radio 1 and 6Music, was voted an album of the year by readers of The Guardian, and has seen a sold-out European tour (including a London show at the Barbican). Following slots at Latitude, Coachella and Sydney Opera House (which he sold out twice), McMorrow headlines Shepherds Bush Empire on October 5 as part of an extensive European and US run of dates heading into the end of this year. James also made a recent guest appearance at Duke Dumont’s debut live show at London’s Oslo (the two have recently collaborated in the studio).
Both ethereal and warm, soulful but still, ‘You Know’ is a tribute to McMorrow’s life-long love of classic hip-hop and R&B, which can be felt across early singles ‘Cavalier’ and ‘Gold’, and contribute to the general reinvention of ‘Post Tropical’. The album title, much like the idiosyncratic ‘You Know’, is deliberately “warm and familiar, but there’s something there that’s maybe not quite what you think it is.”
A deluxe edition of Post Tropical will be released digitally on 10th November, which will include the full standard album plus the following bonus material:
1. When I Leave (bonus track)
2. You Know (bonus track)
3. New Romancers Ft. Moors (bonus track)
4. Red Dust (live / solo version)
5. All Points (live / solo version)
6. Cavalier (1975 remix)
7. Cavalier (DPAT remix)
8. Glacier (Atu remix)
Having since been released to widespread acclaim, ‘Post Tropical’ follows James Vincent McMorrow’s platinum-selling debut album, ‘Early in the Morning’ – which also reached number 1 in Ireland, picked up a Choice Music Prize nomination, and led to breakout hit ‘Higher Love’. ‘Post Tropical’, however, was recorded in just three weeks on a pecan farm half a mile from the Mexican border (which the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House and Animal Collective have all called home). James recently uploaded some new works-in-progress (notably the Hype-Machine-topping ‘When I Leave’), suggesting that – whatever ‘Post Tropical’ actually is – there might just be more on the way.

bretonArtist: Breton

Release: War Room Stories (Deluxe Edition)
Label: Believe Recordings
Genre: Alternative

”The group serves as a reminder to the fact that guitar music – indie, really – is still relevant, and still deserving of our undivided attention.” CLASH

”Dancefloor-friendly and just the right side of leftfield.” The Guardian

Creative electronic five-piece Breton return with two new songs, ‘Titan’ and ‘Parthian Shot’, to accompany the reissue of their highly-rated LP ‘War Room Stories’, set for release on 10th November 2014 on their own label Cut Tooth via Believe Recordings.

Devised while touring Europe with Local Natives and Foals in 2013, the brand new material will appear alongside the original ‘War Room Stories’ and exclusive bonus tracks. The two new tracks are a telling demonstration of both Breton’s range of influences and their command of their medium. ‘War Room Stories’ artfully employed the Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra, whilst the new tracks were produced by processing live instruments into samplers using Native Instruments Maschine — the hip-hop beatmaker’s hardware of choice. Lead vocalist Roman Rappak describes his love of the technology: “One of the things we love about guitars is that they are pure chaos, and never sound the same way twice. So a sampled guitar is this exact moment of chaos, repeat perfectly. It feels like the exact middle ground between a guitar band and a producer project.”

Roman explained that ‘Titan’ is “about feeling connected to a building, or it being part of your life, and then having it taken away.” It’s a bittersweet slice of indie as stark synth chords and vocals are tied together with a delicate background of violin strings. Co-produced by Antoine Gaillet, whose credits include co-writing M83’s ‘Before the Dawn Heals Us’ and mixing on their masterwork ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’, his collaboration with them was a pleasure for the band: “He is incredibly interesting to work with, because he has this instinct for a balancing things that are captured in a studio as a live recording with an almost scientific level of production detail.”

Taking inspiration from an old Iranian military tactic of the same name – a manoeuvre of great skill where a rider would turn around on his horse while retreating and fire a deadly shot at their pursuing enemy – ‘Parthian Shot’ is described by the band as “the most cinematic thing we’ve made for ages.” An early chorus is teased but withheld before samples of crowd footsteps are mixed with sombre piano and guitar which fade into a drum machine beat backed by choir samples and heartfelt vocals from Rappak. “It’s the last track we’ll release for a while,” explains Roman, making the track a symbolic Parthian Shot of their own.
Breton’s reputation as a must-see act comes from their initial performances in squat parties and in their South London all-purpose base – dubbed BretonLABS. Initially performing live because it was more practical to project their film work behind them at music venues, the band quickly developed a dedicated following, with their intense live shows travelling by word of mouth to music journalists, who purposely travelled to Elephant and Castle’s old Natwest bank building to meet the band.

After closing themselves off in Funkhaus, a broadcasting building located in the industrial Mitte district of Berlin, to produce their second album, the band’s mass communication medium has led to their gracing the stages of Europe’s biggest festivals. Vielles Charrues, Rock am Ring, Ibiza Rocks and the world renowned Pitchfork Festival in Paris have all hosted Breton’s intense and visually striking live performances.
The physical Deluxe Edition of ‘War Room Stories’ comes in a limited edition double CD featuring previously unseen tour pictures and a much coveted PDF of all the band’s lyrics to date ¬– revealed in print for the first time in one collection. To promote the release of the Deluxe Edition of ‘War Room Stories’, Breton are embarking on a European tour ending with a much anticipated homecoming gig at London’s Heaven on the 2nd December.

fyfeArtist: Fyfe

Release: For You
Label: Believe Recordings
Genre: Alternative

“Paul Dixon might be a name familiar to some…but none [are] finer than this new project, Fyfe” NME
“Grandiose…erupts into a warm, forceful patter and swelling horns like the onset of a tropical rainstorm” Pitchfork
“Fyfe is rapidly blossoming into something quite special…off-kilter pop music with a bittersweet heart” Clash
“Tugs at the heartstrings before becoming more rhythmic and symphonic…[Fyfe] is still proving hard to categorise” Guardian
“All of a sudden, London has become a hotbed for additive, glitchy R&B…our favourite purveyor happens to be Fyfe” Nylon

Fyfe will release a new single, the beautiful ‘For You’, on July 21: which has already been Zane Lowe’s Next Hype on Radio 1, gone Top 3 on Hype Machine, and seen Fyfe sign a record deal with Believe Recordings. This follows a breakout year for 24-year-old Paul Dixon, with tracks like ‘Solace’ and ‘Conversations’ picking up over one million plays on Soundcloud, a hat trick of Top 10s on Hype Machine, and additional support across Radio 1, 6Music and XFM.
Having supported the likes of London Grammar, Foxes and Cloud Control in between recording his self-produced debut album – which he is currently putting the finishing touches to – Fyfe returns to the live arena with shows at Great Escape and Dot To Dot festivals this month.
A confident and idiosyncratic return, ‘For You’ is a maze of pianos, double-time hip-hop beats and Fyfe’s near-falsetto croon. About two thirds of the way through, the song is suddenly interrupted by a playfully epic saxophone solo, a testament to the symphonic, occasionally-classical textures that persist through Dixon’s work, and his continual willingness to take risks. “I just thought it would sound bloody great! There’s a lyrical emotiveness to Jazz which doesn’t require vocals or lyrics. It’s a guy called David Turay from The Hics on sax, and to me that solo says so much about the euphoric nature of love.”

‘For You’ is a thrilling step-up in the musical evolution of Fyfe. A prodigal young talent, his childhood was spent learning the violin, piano, trumpet and playing in youth orchestras. Having gotten his hands on his brother’s Logic set-up, Dixon shifted from classical compositions to writing his own songs under the alias of David’s Lyre whilst studying Economics at University. Suddenly the two worlds were colliding and something had to give: halfway through his course he dropped out and signed to Mercury Records (“There was a period where I was in an exam and I just wasn’t able to focus”).
Focus is a massive buzzword in the world of Fyfe. It’s what made the fallout from the end of David’s Lyre and the parting of ways with Mercury easier to handle (“the majors are publicly listed companies, and as much as anyone in that building is a music fan, it boils down to profit. I knew this when signing, but not to the extent upon which time and momentum is so critical within these institutions”). The idea of Fyfe, then, was conceived as an expression of freedom and simplicity in the short months after David’s Lyre. Without a manager, label or publicist, Dixon emailed the appropriately-isolated sounds of ‘Solace’ alongside a picture of the back of his head (and no other information) to a handful of music sites. It was to become one of the biggest blog hits of 2013, with the likes of Childish Gambino coming forward as fans (“I wanted to capture the feel of those Lauryn Hill or Neptunes productions I loved growing up,” says Dixon. “It’s beats-y, but also very much vocal-focused”).

Older, wiser, but still just 24, Fyfe is a journey in self-discovery from an artist who has picked himself back up and come back stronger. What started life as a project about reasserting control has blossomed into the intimate, personal romanticism of tracks like ‘For You’. This is pop, but pop with a working brain and a beating heart.

Andreas Moe // Ocean EP OUT NOW!

Andreas press cut

One of Believe Recordings latest signings Andreas Moe releases his 3rd EP entitled ‘Ocean’.

The up beat track features Andreas’ powerful and raw vocal range against acoustic melodies and kick back drum beats co produced with Peter Miles.

The sought after writer, producer and singer, first burst onto the scene as the feature vocalist on Avicii’s international hit “Fade Into Darkness” and has since written and will be featured on songs by Tiesto in June and Hardwell and Tiesto in October.

As an artist in his own right, he prefers a more laid back acoustic guitar sound, perfectly demonstrated by Ocean.

A unique talent, Ocean, is a follow up track from the success of This Year released in Sweden in 2013, which received over 2 million streams on Spotify.

Andreas Moe says, “Ocean is a simple song about the power of love. When the right person loves you at the right time and in the right way, they can turn that “river” inside of you into an “Ocean”. I co-wrote and co-produced the song and I’m so happy to be able to release it as my next single”

meadowlarkArtist: Meadowlark
Release: Three Six Five EP
Label: Believe Recordings
Genre: Alternative

Plymouth trio Meadowlark will release their debut EP ‘Three Six Five’ on May 26 via Believe Recordings. The band will tour the UK throughout May, including a London show at the Sebright Arms on May 27.

Lead Track ‘Family Tree’ is the perfect introduction to Meadowlark, as it blends cinematic orchestral arrangements with sparse, echoing piano chimes and subtle guitar swirls that bring to mind the pristine pop traits of London Grammar. Over the course of the EP’s four tracks however, Meadowlark display a diverse pool of emotion, influence and style that range from the hushed, brooding moments on the aptly titled ‘Forlorn’ to the joyous sing-along crescendos on ‘I’ve Got You’.

As eluded to by the debut EP’s title, the band have been together for just a year (almost exactly to the EP’s release date) after meeting at a Tallest Man On Earth gig and instantly deciding to join forces. The band are fronted by chief songwriter Kate McGill who, at the time of meeting bandmates Carl Jones and Daniel Broadley (who often rotate instrumental duties), was the 13th most subscribed to musician on YouTube, tallying up millions of hits on her covers of Adele, Fleet Foxes and The Shins.

The Three Six Five EP was recorded and produced by Peter Miles (Dry The River, We Are The Ocean, Sonic Boom Six) at Middle Farm Studios over a period of one week. It boasts four intricate and introspective songs that showcase Meadowlark’s collaborative ability to rework McGill’s songs into fully-fledged soundscapes that reference their mutual love for Bon Iver and Sigur Ros.
