RL grimesArtist: RL Grime, What So Not
Release: Tell Me

Freshly signed to Future Classic this is the monster summer collaborative single from electronic giants What So Not (Flume + Emoh Instead) and RL Grime. hook and twinArtist:Hook & The Twin

Release: Animals EP
Label: Dancing Coins
Genre: Dance

Following the success of their epic debut album Never Ever Ever, Hook & The Twin are set to add one final extra chapter – a four-track remix EP Animals, released on 23rd June 2014 through Cold Specks’ Dancing Coins imprint. Animals is the band’s fourth single from the album, and along with a brace of inventive remixes from favourite producers The Cyclist and Cora Novoa – as well as the band’s own remix of former single and album highlight We’re So Light – the release signals the duo’s firm shift towards the dancefloor, without sacrificing any of their instinctive pop sensibility.

Hook & The Twin are very proud to be featuring two of their favourite new producers on the new EP. Irish-born producer The Cyclist’s fuzzy tape throb psychedelia is very much influenced by Boards of Canada and early Warp artists, an ‘attempt to get to a time in electronic music, where everything’s warmer’ in his own words. With debut album Bones In Motion released on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder offshoot Leaving Records/Stones Throw, and a second in the pipeline, his music as The Cyclist and alias Buz Ludzha has recently garnered rave reviews in Pitchfork, XLR8R, FACT, and Resident Advisor.

frikstailers 2Artist: Frikstailers
Release: Crop Circles EP
Label: ZZK Records
Genre: Dance – Break & Beats

Argentina’s Frikstailers return to planet Earth with their new six-track EP that pairs cosmic synths with funky, frenetic cumbia beats fused with electronic mayhem designed to move terrestrial butts worldwide.

If anything characterizes these adventurous producers, it’s the absence of easy formulas. This time around, the duo – now based in Mexico City – pushes the limits of electronic music by applying a heavy dose of extraterrestrial synthesizers to the lush organic Latin beats that have seen them rock parties from London’s Boiler Room to Mexico’s Vive Latino.

On “Intro Orbital,” the Frikstailers make contact, inviting listeners to take a step back from reality and into an ethereal sonic landscape that will launch them straight into the sweaty dance floor madness of “Crop Circles.” Once beamed up, it’s on to the Amazonian acid dub landscapes of “Omeprazol.” Later, the arpeggiated synths of “Kepler” lead listeners towards playful drums and vocals buried deep in a tropical outer-space jungle.

Staff Picks: Top Albums of 2013 #10

December, 13th 2013 12:30

Artist: Flume
Release: Flume: Deluxe Edition
Label: Future Classic
Release Date: November 2013
Picked by: Natalie Graham – Office Manager

I’m always stunned when such young talent makes an impact; in this case Flume, otherwise known as Harley Streten, manages to combine a mixture of R&B sounds, smooth lyrical vocals and put them against a dance backdrop. It really is a breath of fresh air and his recent deluxe album offers a series of new tracks, as well as fresh takes on the original versions.  – Natalie Graham

Charlotte OC - Colour My Heart EPArtist: Charlotte OC
Release: Colour My Heart
Label: Stranger Records
Genre: Pop

22 year old Charlotte OC, hailed as the British Lana Del Ray, arrives with her debut EP on Stranger Records (Lana Del Ray, Filthy Boy). The title track ‘Colour My Heart’ written by Charlotte, was produced and recorded by Tim Anderson (Solange, Sia) in LA. ‘Colour My Heart’ is an intoxicating mix of emotional lyrics and heady, thick vocals. The Blackburn born singer has spread her wings over to LA and recorded and produced a supernatural title track and video. There is a spooky and bewitching sound to the song that is powered along by underlying beats and earthy melodies pulsating throughout.

The Best Of Armand Van HeldenArtist: Armand Van Helden
Release: The Best of Armand Van Helden
Label: Southern Fried Records
Genre: Dance

10 tracks of pure Armand van Helden funk on this excellent Best Of comp. An awful lot has changed for Armand Van Helden since he first signed to Southern Fried back in 2002. In 2005, he scored a huge commercial hit with ‘My My My’, his biggest since ‘You Don’t Know Me’ hit No.1 back in ‘99. In the interim, he’s released two excellent long players, ‘Nympho’ (2004) and ‘Ghettoblaster’ (2007) while also satisfying his New York culture vulture cravings with ‘New York: A Mix Odyssey’ (2004). With five top thirty singles under his belt, it appears that Armand has found himself a new home in the new millennium.
